“Architects honor National Artists for Architecture at the CCP”

 

THE Philippine Institute of Architects (PIA), in partnership with the Cultural Center of the Philippines, pays tribute to the Architectural Legacies of the National Artists of the Philippines at the CCP Main Theater Lobby on April 29, 2016 at 6pm.

The event honors the recipients of the National Artists in the field of Architecture and its Allied Arts, namely Juan Nakpil, Pablo Antonio, Leandro Locsin, Ildefonso Santos and Jose Ma. Zaragoza, most of whom were past presidents, Gold Medal of Merit Awardees and Honorary Fellows of the Institute.

The tribute to the National Artists in the field of Architecture is one of the highlights of the evening’s program, which includes the investiture rites of the PIA College of Fellows, the Honor Dinner, and the turnover ceremony and induction of the new officers of the PIA.

The Philippine Institute of Architects is the oldest and one of the most respected architectural societies in Asia.  It was founded by leading Filipino architects in 1933 with Juan Nakpil as the founding president. For over eight decades, it remained as one of the leading architectural institutions in the forefront of preservation of built heritage and the promotion of the artistry and creativity of Filipino architects and designers.

The Orden ng Gawad Pambansang Alagad ng Sining or the Order of the National Artist Award was created in 1972 through the Presidential Decree 1001, as the highest national recognition given to a Filipino who made significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts in Music, Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, Literature, Film and Broadcast, and Architecture and its Allied Arts. Since then, four architects, namely Juan Felipe Nakpil (1972), Pablo S. Antonio (1976), Leandro V. Locsin (199O), Jose Ma. Zaragoza (2O14), and a landscape architect, Ildefonso P. Santos (2OO6), were each conferred the prestigious distinction of National Artist for their individual contributions to Philippine Architecture, in particular, and the evolution of Philippine Art and Culture as a whole.
