RESIDENTS of Pila in Laguna were enthralled by the various renditions of kundimans by soprano Myramae Meneses, tenor Arman Ferrer, pianist Agot Espino and the Kabataang Gitarista in a concert billed as Lakbay Harana held last May 18 at the historic Church of Pila. The said event, the first of a series of outreach concerts from May to November 2016, was made possible by the Cultural Center of the Philippines through its Cultural Exchange Department and the Tribung Pilipino Foundation.

The concert was staged through the partnership with the Shrine of San Antonio de Padua community. The Pila concert kicks off the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Diocese of San Pablo this year.

Lakbay Harana is an offshoot of a series of well attended concerts held in 2015 at the CCP’s Bulwagang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater Lobby) entitled Harana sa Dapit Hapon, also a joint undertaking of the CCP and the Tribung Pilipino Foundation (TPF). Lakbay Harana aims to promote and reawaken the public’s interest and appreciation (especially the young generation) for immortal kundimans, harana, balitaw, danza and unforgettable love songs by great Filipino composers. Noted classical singers and performers are featured in the outreach tour.

Succeeding concerts of the event will be held in Lipa City, Batangas on July 22, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur in September and Baler, Aurora in November. (Photo by Raul E. Asis)

CCP OUTREACH PRESENTS ANTI-CORRUPTION PLAY FOR GOVT. WORKERS

“CCP OUTREACH PRESENTS ANTI-CORRUPTION PLAY FOR GOVT. WORKERS”

 aiwp-poster1

Tanghalang Pilipino’s WALANG KUKURAP theatrical play will be presented for government workers under the outreach program of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) on May 18, May 30 and June 01, 2016.

Billed as “Art in the Workplace” (Sining sa Tanggapan), the project is aimed at encouraging public workers in local and national levels to support and promote Philippine art and culture and moreimportantly, advocate the vital role that art plays in national and community development.

The one hour program will showcase the artistic excellence of the Filipino artists, along with the in-housetalents (from the offices that will be visited) will be presented as a living proof that art exists andflourishes in various workplaces and contributes to the enhancement of the work environment. The performance will be complemented with a forum-interaction between the artists and the audience to discuss the insights about the performance and its social relevance.

Walang Kukurap is an original play that combines traditional theater with live interviews and unscripted performances to blur the line between reality and fiction, as it attempts to shed light on the politics and practices that define public governance in the Philippines today.  It is a suspense-thriller that offers a penetrating analysis of corruption and graft.  Its text takes off from the findings of artist-researchers aswell as first-hand testimony from government whistle-blowers and anonymous syndicate insiders, ultimately leading to questions about the coopting and destruction of national character.

From 2012 – 2015, “Art in the Workplace” has been mounted at the Department of Budget andManagement, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Commission on Audit, Department of Finance, Department ofScience and Technology, Metro Manila Development Authority, the Office of the Ombudsman, the Bureau of Customs, National Historical Commission of the Philippines and the Career Executive Service Board, reaching an estimate audience of over 3,000 government workers and leaders.

For 2016, TP’s Walang Kukurap will be presented in support of the government’s campaign against graft and corruption on May 18 (11:00am) for the National Parks & Development Committee, May 30 (3:00pm) for the Philippine Coast Guard and June 01 (3:00pm) for the main branch of the Landbank of the Philippines.

CCP & MADZ WELCOME THE 2ND BATCH OF THE SING PHILIPPINES YOUTH CHOIR (SPYC)

“CCP & MADZ WELCOME THE 2ND BATCH OF THE SING PHILIPPINES YOUTH CHOIR (SPYC)”

 SPYC-2 SPYC-Bagong Umaga

THE Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the Philippine Madrigal Singers (MADZ) welcome the second batch of choristers for the 2016 Sing Philippines Youth Choir (SPYC).  The latest batch, selected out of the 140 applications received from all over the country, will participate in a music camp at the CCP. The music camp will run from May 31 to June 4 and will culminate with a concert of the Philippine Madrigal Singers at the CCP Main Theater on June 5.

Launched in June 2014 by the MADZ and the CCP thru its Cultural Exchange Department (CED), the SPYC featured fifty (50) singers from fifteen (15) regions across the country who underwent a week-long professional music camp under MADZ choirmaster Mark Anthony Carpio. The Sing Philippines movement brings to life National Artist and MADZ founder Andrea O. Veneracion’s vision of a nation singing in harmony and united in songs.

For 2016, another set of gifted singers from the local communities will be given the opportunity to advance their music skills and contribute to the propagation of choral music in the country. This year’s members come from 26 areas to include Ilocos Norte, Isabela, Tarlac, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Batangas, Laguna, Cavite, Rizal, Baguio and Bicol in Luzon. The choral singers from Visayas are from the province of Capiz, Cebu, Bohol and Leyte. And from Mindanao, the singers hail from Pagadian, Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Lanao del Norte, Davao, Tagum, Koronadal, Cotabato and Agusan del Norte.  The National Capital Region participants are from Pasig and Quezon City.

The SPYC 1st Batch will also be gathered to sing with new batch and the MADZ.  Since they were organized, the SPYC Batch 2014 performed again at the CCP Main Theater last July 25, 2015 for the MADz Concert and the Closing Program of the 2nd AOV International Choral Festival. The members expressed the same excitement even after a year they have been gathered together. Their unforgettable experiences during the 2014 choral training have inspired them even more to continue their love and passion for music and the arts.

The participants’ message for the MADZ and the CCP affirms the vision of Prof. Veneracion. “Thank you for the music,” says Pauline Arejola of Laguna and they “continue to inspire more people, more musicians.” “To the PMS, thank you for the opportunity to sing with you, according to Samuel Acosta, Jr. of Isabela, “it’s a life changing experience that I will treasure forever.” For Elaine Jessa Tolentino of Bacolod, “being an SPYC member is such a wonderful experience.” Michelle Erfe of South Cotabato is thankful for this opportunity, calling it “a great experience that I will never forget. Thank you MADZ for touching our lives, with your music and simplicity.” Sherberk Cabrales of Ilocos Sur wishes the Madz to “continue empowering young Filipino artists. “Rest assured we will be instrumental in realizing the vision of MADZ and the CCP.” Nathan Kim Mosot of Iligan is proud “to be singing with the MADZ” and calls the rest of the SPYC “priceless!”

For more information about the SPYC, contact the CCP Cultural Exchange Department at tel. no. 832-1125 locals 1708 and 1709.
