At first glance, we thought she was Marian Rivera rehearsing that mid-day afternoon for the musical play KATIPS of Philippine Stagers Foundation. With her moves, with her smiles and nice gestures, you could very well compare her to that famous and pretty GMA-7 top actress. But she’s not Marian Rivera, really. She’s Maya Encila, the New Stager who’s portraying the role of Lara in the above-mentioned musical play of PSF.

She’s so sweet, friendly and nice. She smiled with so much captivating manners, and even one gay blogger could somehow feel he’s a ‘straight guy’, all the more when Maya sat beside with him for a quick interview and whispered words into his ears.

“Two months ago, when me and my dad visited here in the Philippines and direk Vince Tanada saw me, he at once offered me to play the role of Lara in this musical play”, Maya whispered so delicately into the ears of a blogger. “He told me I must become a Stager. I didn’t hesitate for once, and I readily said YES to direk Vince. You see, acting on theater is my passion, that’s why. And my parents also wanted me to experience more about life, most especially here in the Philippines. After two months, we came back here after organizing everything in our residence in the United States. And here I am now, rehearsing for this play. Everything came so fast.”

That was the last rehearsal day when we interviewed Maya which happened just a week before their first performance for the said musical play. And when the blogger saw Maya again on stage this time, definitely, the blogger knew that Maya fully deserved the role and the break she got into. She’s good.

“I can very well relate to the character I’m portraying”, Maya also said at that time. “Like Lara, my character in the play, I was also raised in the United States and grew-up there. And like Lara also, I had no idea what happened during the Martial Law years in the Philippines. Even the word Desaparecido doesn’t mean a thing to me. That’s why I felt I almost acted as myself.”

Maya was thankful also to her director for motivating her fully and being the ‘push-factor’ in giving her very best for the role.

“He’s always at my back supporting me”, Maya whispered on.  “Direk Vince, gave me space and freedom to explore and further enhance my role.”

The Stagers, including his leading men on the play in persons of Kierwin Larena and Kevin Posadas (both alternating for the role of ‘Greg’ which is Lara’s love interest in the play. Lara is Maya’s character on the play, we say again), always gave her feed backs and moral support during rehearsals and performances.

“And I really appreciate it”, Maya whispered again to a blogger’s ear because loud music at their rehearsal venue was being played. “It helped me to further enhance my character because even though  I have acted in some stage plays back in the United States, it’s still different here. Their feed backs and pointers were like my guidelines to do it better.”

But how does Maya feel when people tell her that she looks like Marian Rivera?

‘Well, I’m really excited about that”, Maya answered while whispering again at the end of interview. “It’s a challenge, too, on my part. Because it makes me feel I must really do good not to suffer in comparison. It’s also kinda’ mixed emotions on my part. Because you see, people may expect so much from me. That’s why I am taking advantage of my good singing voice now as an asset for me. In this play, I sing a lot and I hope people will notice that I really sing well.”

Maya Encila. Remember the name. A true artist and a good person, too, at that.

“Nandito kami! Nandito kami!!

After their second performance that day (July 29 performance), nag-standing ovation tuloy ang mga estudyante sa pagtatapos ng dula.

Kierwin Larena, don’t break our hearts!!!!

jomar tanada-bautista: “my uncle vince does it better!”

jomar: high respects for his uncle vince
jomar: high respects for his uncle vince

jomar2 jomar3

“Panyong serves as an inspiration to the younger generation”, sagot ni Jomar. “It’s all in the lives of the people at that time or era, to be somewhat brave and strong. He is the adviser and the writer of CCP-NPA rebel group at that time- during the Martial Law years. He is also a writer of an underground newspaper which attacks the people in power at that time.

“He is the kind of person that cares for people and his love for his country is so remarkable”, patuloy pa ni Jomar. “That’s why the role is very special for me. These kind of persons represent so many people at that time. And I am so glad that my uncle Vince chose me to be his alternate for this role.”

Anong klaseng mga preparations naman ang inihanda ni Jomar para sa sarili niya to portray the role efficiently?

“Since KATIPS is a musical play, I had a series of voice lessons because Panyong’s character have many song numbers in the play”, muling sagot ni Jomar. “And I also needed to gain weight in order for me to look older than Kierwin Larena, who’s portraying the role of Greg. And I can only look older if I get a little fat.

“I also watched a lot of film documentaries pertaining to that historical period of our country”, dagdag na sabi ni Jomar. “Also videos from Youtube. What I saw in those videos, I imitated the actions of those rebel leaders. But I tried to break from the monotony to avoid comparisons.”

“Obviously, he does it better!”, mabilis na tugon ni Jomar. “I need to be honest. My uncle is a lot more experienced stage actor. Sa kanya lang ako natuto. And never in my wildest dreams na mahihigitan ko ang galing niya sa pagganap. Plus, the role, of course, fits him better.

“Let us not neglect the sacrifices made by our ancestors, our heroes, our grandfathers and grandmothers”, pagwawakas na sabi ni Jomar. “Filipinos at that time sacrificed a lot for the freedom of our country that the millenial youths like me are enjoying now. This play which relieved the darkest era of our history will serve as an eye-opener. And I can say, Never Again!”

CARLO Obispo’s 1-2-3 will open the 12th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival on August 5-14 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

1-2-3 will be shown at 7 p.m. following the Cinemalaya opening ceremony at 6 pm on August 5.  The event is open to the public.

1-2-3 follows the overwhelming circus of unfamiliar and harsh realities of a country boy’s search to find his sister, locked up in a brothel.  Luis is just one of the teenage boys in the idyllic and fishing island of Silag.  He goes through the issues of adolescence with his childhood sweetheart, Maricar, while his younger sister, Lulu busies herself by joining amateur singing contests in hopes of becoming a star.  One day, a talent manager discovers her singing and offers her to undergo vocal coaching in Manila, and later to join a popular TV singing contest.  Lulu eagerly takes the opportunity and leaves for the city, thinking her dreams are finally coming true.  However, after a few months, Lulu’s family loses communication with her.  This drives Luis to go to Manila in search for his sister.

In the cast of 1-2-3 are Carlos Dala as Luis, Barbara Miguel as Lulu, Therese Malvar as Maricar, Sue Prado and Patricia Javier.

Director Obispo also wrote the screenplay of the 1-2-3.

Obispo is a Cinemalaya alumnus.  He directed his first full-length film Purok 7, which was one of the finalists in the full-length feature category in the 2013 Cinemalaya.  Born and raised in Camiling, Tarlac, Carlo ‘Arc’ Obispo went to Saint Louis University to major in Philosophy, minor in Communication Arts.

This year’s Cinemalaya carries the theme “Break the Surface”.  Nineteen new digital independent films will compete in the full-length feature and short feature categories.  In addition to the Main Competition, Cinemalaya will offer Festival’s Best, Asian Showcase, Cinemalaya Documentaries, Tribute to Francis Pasion, and Cinemalaya Institute showcase. The Cinemalaya Campus, a major component of the Festival, will be held on August 9-10 at the CCP Little Theater.  The Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video, which is considered the longest-running independent film competition of its kind in the ASEAN/Asian region, will have its 28th run during Cinemalaya.
Cinemalaya is a project of the Cinemalaya Foundation, Inc., the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Ayala Malls Cinemas.  Established in 2005, Cinemalaya is an all-digital film festival and competition that aims to discover, encourage and honor cinematic works of Filipino filmmakers.

“your love for country is greater than anything else”— kevin posadas

kevin: a remarkable artist
kevin: a remarkable artist (PHOTO BY; MR. VINO ORIARTE)

One of the Stagers we really do admire is Mr. Kevin Posadas. Very unaffected kasi ang attitude niya, innocent-looking, pure and gentle.

kevin as GREG in the play "KATIPS"
kevin as GREG in the play “KATIPS”

Pero for Kevin, what made him fully embrace into the character of Greg?

“For one, maganda ‘yung material and the role as well”, bungad na sagot ni Kevin in one coffee break sa kanilang rehearsals ng play. “Very naturalistic lang ang ginawa kong approach sa character ko as Greg. Na tulad ng ibang mga taong nagmamahal sa bayan niya, I wanted to show, through Greg’s character, that your love for country is greater than anything else. It surpasses any forms or labels of LOVE. It goes beyond boundaries. And you are willing to give-up everything for the great love that you feel for your country.”

kevin: already saw the beauty of arts at a very young age
kevin: already saw the beauty of arts at a very young age

“Before kasi, I think that was the year 2007, I first became a production staff pa lang ng play na ito”, pagri-reveal ni Kevin. “I already saw the whole play at that time, at bata pa ako noon.

Pero off stage, we’re best of friends talaga.

“All I can say now is, let’s cross the bridge when we get there.

lenard on the road
lenard on the road

Kaya naman, take note.

Siyempre, mahirap ang preparations and all.

Like Nikki Co, Jansen Aguilar, Gertrud Hahn and JV Benito Villegas.

More power, Lenard! keep it up!
