the electrifying blue sea of st. pedro calungsod (a film review on “pedro calungsod: batang martir”)

What made Pedro Calungsod: Batang Martir so efficient in delivering a message was the fact that it centered on the real virtues of a Filipino Saint and the conflicts that arose as he chose to live a life of great sacrifice. The movie was enlightening and thought-provoking. And the film’s director was soft in executing a saintly life- with his impressive compressed camera shots and good motivation to the actors’ performances.

Rocco Nacino, who portrayed the role of St. Pedro was magnificent in his subtlety on acting and fluent on Visayan accent- which made him very convincing as an actor. His ecstatic smile at the start and at the end of the film as he laid there dying of an arrow wound- was the most powerful scene of the movie. You could feel electrified on how a young Saint did choose to offer his life for Christianity.

As the angels sang and a secret friend felt so proud watching the film- Pedro Calungsod: Batang Martir was among those films now, that could be treasured from the innermost feelings of the heart.

Christian Vasquez who portrayed San Diego de Vitores was also efficient, deep and got the lasting impresssion of how good an actor could be if only he’d be given a role like this. Mr. Vasquez had, indeed, matured as an actor and he gave Mr. Rocco Nacino a terrific support in the movie.

The screenplay didn’t compromise with “commercialism” just to attain a wider audience.  It made true to its promise to deliver only the real ‘state of mind’ of a male Catholic- endearing, forgiving and “ethereal-like”.

Also surprising were the bit players of this film. The young male actors, most especially, who all could ACT and offer a time to be a part of a film that’s holy and humble.  All of them did a good job.

One scene, though, that made a blogger smiled so sweetly as he watched the film was when St. Pedro saw a big shell that landed on  the bay. He held it strongly and listened to the sound and the music hidden underneath the big shell. And with the director’s great mind concept, he let that sound be heard. Oh, so wonderful… AND YOU’D SOON KNOW, IT WAS THE ELECTRIFYING BLUE SEA OF ST. PEDRO CALUNGSOD THAT MADE IT ALL HAPPEN.

Simple movies like this could always make you cry. Because it spoke of a life untarnished, a melody unbroken and a love untied. It would make you think that in the end, no matter how much material wealth you had or great accomplishments you did- it would only be YOU AND GOD.

With the power of “two” loving souls- you and God- life could never be the same again.

Pedro Calungsod: Ang Batang Martir is surely destined to be a classic film on its genre. Kudos.

SSSIP’S AWE BLOG’S “MEN OF SUBSTANCE” (ALSO THE MEN WHO MATTERED MOST IN PHILIPPINE SHOWBIZ) FOR THE YEAR 2013!

MEN ARE WARRIORS. THEY PROTECT AND SERVE THE LAND. THEY DO UNBELIEVABLE THINGS JUST TO PROMOTE GOODNESS, JUSTICE AND STABILITY.

THEY SECURE THE FUTURE, EDUCATE THE YOUNG, ENTERTAIN THE WEARY AND INSPIRE A LOT MORE OTHER MEN LIKE THEM TO BECOME LIKE THEM, AND TRANSFORM THEMSELVES INTO BECOMING WHO THEY REALLY ARE.

THEY ARE, WHAT SSSIP’S AWE BLOG CALLS, AS “THE MEN OF SUBSTANCE”.

THEY ARE ALSO THE MEN WHO MATTERED MOST IN PHILIPPINE SHOWBIZ.

YES, IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY, PEOPLE MAY THINK THAT THE JOB IS EASY. OR SOME MAY CONCLUDE THAT “WARRIOR-ANGELS”-THE LIVING ONES AT THAT- DON’T EXIST THERE.

BUT LET’S ALL KEEP OUR HEADS UP HIGH AND PERSEVERE WITH OUR FAITHS. THERE ARE STILL MEN OUT THERE, ESPECIALLY IN THE WORLD OF SHOWBIZ, WHO CARES.

IN THE YEAR 2013, THEY ALL DID THEIR BEST. THEY ALL SHONE BRIGHTER. AND THEY ALL WORKED HARDER TO SERVE AND ENLIGHTEN A “CALAMITY-INFLICTED” NATION.

AND AS THE YEAR ENDS, LET’S TAKE A FAST GLIMPSE ON WHO THEY ARE. SMILE AND CLAP OUR HANDS… AND LOVE THEM ALL THE MORE!

HERE ARE SSIP’S AWE BLOG’S “MEN OF SUBSTANCE 2013”!

(note: they are the personal choices of SSSIP’S AWE blog and not to be contested by anyone, okay?)

GO!

1.) VINCE TANADA– In the form of great theater productions and stage performances, Atty. Vince Tanada managed to capture the hearts of many Highschool, Elementary and even College students in various Colleges and Universities who watched their two stage plays this year- “Pedro Calungsod: D Muuuzzziiikkkaaalll” and “Bonifacio: Isang Sarsuwela”. With almost 500 stage performances within the year, Vince proved that he could still educate the young through theatrical performances, and at the same time, entertain them. This is, indeed, a mammoth-like TASK. And that made Vince number one on our list!

2.) ROCCO NACINO– Being able to portray two great characters onscreen this year made actor Rocco Nacino land on the number two spot of this list on Men of Substance. He proved his sincerity, he proved his loving care, and he proved to be the one and only person on our “number two” list. His sensitivity as an actor was truly felt on an earlier film- “Burgos”, as he portrayed the role of activist Jonas Burgos who became a desaparecido. Then came the most-coveted role of Saint Pedro Calungsod in the film Pedro Calungsod: Ang Batang Martir. And this time around, he managed to be the “perfect role-model” to every young Catholic believer. Surely, Rocco’s image as an actor will all the more be valued. Such a substantial young man!

3.) ATOM ARAULLO– Every young man who dreams of becoming a broadcaster someday will always remember the name “Atom Araullo”. They will all dream to be like him someday, look-up to his name, and admire his courage, ferocity and determination to present a news coverage that’s so dangerous and life-threatening. In the center of the storm Yolanda, Atom was there. And he delivered.

4.) BOY ABUNDA– This man is really a GIANT in terms of substance. He personally delivered the relief goods to the Yolanda victims, updated the latest showbiz and calamity events, and managed to mix socially-relevant news with gossip news.

5.) GOVERNOR E.R. EJERCITO– He continues the legacy left by his godfather (the late Fernando Poe, Jr.) and father (the late character actor George Estregan) in helping the workers of the movie industry. He sees to it that he continues making films every year, just to help the movie workers and fellow actors. Even though he’s now in the world of Politics, Gob E.R.’s heart stays with the movie folks.

6.) PIOLO PASCUAL– Still the front-runner among our movie actors as an advocate to the poor and to the calamity victims. This kind of image enhanced more of his being an actor. And as the years passed, his depth as an individual and charisma as an artist was truly felt.

7.) JOHN LLOYD CRUZ– The Valentino. The Lover. The Controversial Man… but all with a SUBSTANCE. That’s John Lloyd for us, and always will he be. Forever.

8.) DEREK RAMSAY– He is the athletic man that women likes to love, but soon learns to HATE? And we just don’t know why.

9.) MANNY PACQUIAO– Winning another international boxing title surely got him there.

10.) MON CONFIADO– In the world of independent film making, Mon managed to deliver an overwhelming task. He became its soul, and majority of indie film artists loved and embraced him. He was their HOPE.

11.) MARYO J. DELOS REYES– His ‘inborn’ goodness as a man, his soft heart, willingness to help fellow artists and showbiz workers, his gentleness, his artistry, his great management decisions- all made him land on the 11th spot of this list!

12.) VIC SOTTO- This great celebrity guy also loves to help people- and you could really feel his utmost sincerity. He is straight, frank, direct-to-the-point. No dilly-dally kind of guy. A man of few words, but a man of action. And for almost three decades, he made us all laugh and be happy. What a man!

13.) ELWOOD PEREZ– He managed to make a great film comeback as a movie director via the film Otso, and this made him land on this list. What’s so magical and substantial about this man is the fact that his “hands” as a film artist were never tarnished. All the more it could create great works of film arts.

14.) GERALD SANTOS– In the world of singing, only one young man totally impressed SSSIP’s AWE blog. And it’s Mr. Gerald Santos. For the whole year of 2013, Mr. Santos entertained thousands and thousands of fans with his full-packed mall shows and provincial appearances. His elegance and magnifying presence as a male singer-performer was truly an “everlasting gift”.

15.) DENNIS TRILLO/TOM RODRIGUEZ– This two straight male actors fascinated everyone this year when they portrayed the role of gay lovers in their teleserye “My Husband’ Lover” and they both became phenomenal, along with the show. What a hard task they both delivered, with no regrets.

from yahoo.OMG: ‘Fast & Furious 7’ pushed back to 2015, will include late actor PAUL WALKER!

paul: an angel, an advocate
paul: an angel, an advocate
NEW YORK/LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The release of “Fast & Furious 7,” the big-budget action film that was shut down in November after the death of actor Paul Walker in a car crash, has been pushed back nine months to April 2015, Universal Pictures said on Monday.
Walker, who died in a fiery one-car crash at the age of 40 on November 30, will appear in the film, Universal said.
The “Fast & Furious” film series, which has grossed more than $2 billion at the global box office and helped turn around the fortunes of Comcast Corp-owned Universal, was originally slated to be released on July 11, 2014, in the summer movie-going season.
The seventh installment of the popular series about illegal street racing, crime and heists will be released on April 10, 2015, Universal said in a statement. It said that series star Vin Diesel and the late Walker would “lead the returning cast.”
Diesel, also one of the producers, first announced the new release date on Facebook on Sunday.
Walker, who became a symbol of car racing and car culture in his role as law enforcement officer Brian O’Conner in the “Fast & Furious” series, was a passenger in a red Porsche Carrera GT sports car that crashed on November 30 in Santa Clarita, Calif. about 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
The car careened off of a street, struck a utility pole and burst into flames, also killing driver Roger Rodas. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the accident but have said that speed probably played a role.
Production on “Fast 7” was on a break at the time for the Thanksgiving holiday and it was not clear how many of Walker’s scenes had been filmed.
Production was suspended days after the crash and Universal has not said when filming will resume.

“CLOSER YOU AND I”

(LYRICS, originally sung by gino padilla)

Hey, there’s a look in your eyes
Must be love at first sight
You were just part of a dream
Nothing more so it seemed
But my love couldn’t wait much longer
Just can’t forget the picture of your smile
‘Coz everytime I close my eyes
You come alive

The closer I get to touching you
The closer I get to loving you
Give it a time
Just a little more time
We’ll be together
Every little smile
That special smile
The twinkle in your eye
In a little while
Give it a time
Just a little more time
So we can get closer
You and I

Then could I love you more
So much stronger than before
Why does it seem like a dream
So much more so it seems
I guess I found my inspiration
With just one smile, you take my breath away
So hold me close
And say you’ll stay with me now

The closer I get to touching you
The closer I get to loving you
Give it a time
Just a little more time
We’ll be together
Every little smile
That special smile
The twinkle in your eye
In a little while
Give it a time
Just a little more time
So we can get closer
You and I

A FILIPINO FAMILY CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS

SUNSTAR

AN ESSAY ON “CHRISTMAS IN THE PHILIPPINES” (FROM SUNSTAR.COM)

http://www.sunstar.com.ph/weekend-davao/2013/11/30/sunday-essays-christmas-philippines-then-and-now-316441

FOR some countries, Christmas is only a one-day celebration during the month of December, but not in the Philippines. Out of all the number of festivals celebrated by Filipinos all over the country, Christmas is the longest one to be celebrated.

Even before the month of December arrives, Christmas songs are already being played on the radio or in the malls and Christmas trees, lights and decors are already sold in the market. This is how early the spirit of Christmas can be felt in the Philippines.

However, the yuletide season in the country really begins at the 16th up until the 24th day of the last month of the year where Misa de Gallo (Night Mass), a nine-day devotion which is usually done as early as 3 o’clock in the morning, starts.

Most of the time people are encouraged to participate in this series of “simbang gabi” because of the belief that if one completes the nine mornings of epiphany; one wish shall be granted to them.

Filipinos, just like the rest of the world, are fond of carolling during Christmas season too. Most of them are children who tend to ask for their “aginaldo” or Christmas present which is often cash and coins.

These Christmas parties which Filipinos are also fond of organizing are also classified in many celebrations.

The school and office party which is usually celebrated one week before Christmas is different from the party which is meant only for the family. These parties usually serve as a reunion wherein relatives outside the country reunite with their family here in the Philippines.

Most of the time, the local government, churches and even private institutions conduct fund raising Christmas contests like Parol (Christmas lantern) making, carolling and Christmas lights exhibition to be donated to an orphanage, school or hospital for example.

The most traditional and preferred way of how Filipinos celebrate this season is staying up late on 24th for the night-long party of the “Noche Buena”, a feast usually done on the Christmas eve with the family.

Ham, Queso de bola (Cheese) and lechon, three of the classic Pinoy Christmas food, are usually served this night.

However, this picture of how Filipinos celebrate Christmas has deepened more since the last three Decembers where the country suffered devastation brought by raging Christmas typhoons Sendong (2011), Ondoy (2012) and Yolanda (2013).

After these series of unfortunate events, the bazaar and extravagant celebration of Christmas became more frugal and meaningful.

Those people who used to go shopping with the use of their Christmas bonuses learned to set aside their wish lists to give way to the basic needs of those who were in need of help.

Meanwhile, those who follow the traditional simbang gabi, do not limit their prayers and wishes only to themselves but also to other people who are suffering crisis in their lives.

Other institutions, public or not, has also become more particular on how they will spend their hard-earned money. In fact, there are some companies and organizations who chose to gather all their cash bonuses to donate cash and kinds to the typhoon victims.

Some Filipinos who already planned on going home during the Christmas holiday decided to volunteer themselves on charity works like packing and distributing relief goods and donations instead of celebrating with their family.

Different institutions and organizations that used to do fund-raising charity events became more determined to raise money and find sponsors or donors to be given to the thousand homeless people in the remote areas.

Families who used to serve excessive servings of food during Noche Buena learned to limit their cooking and share the extra ones to others instead of leaving it spoiled on the fridge.

These are only a few positive changes on how Filipino Christmas celebration has become today.

The Philippines may not be among the list of the first world countries but celebrating Christmas here is one thing that this country will always be known for –celebrating Christmas not only for one’s self but for the whole country as well. (By Ms. Necta Casiple)
