SATURDAY, APRIL 16, 2011

Tomorrow, 17 April 2011, is Palm Sunday, the start of the Holy Week in the Christian World. As you may very well know, I grew up in the Philippines observing the solemnity of the Holy Week, whether I be in Manila, my birthplace, or in San Fernando, Pampanga, where I would spend my summer vacations as a child.
Holy Week in the Philippines during the late 1970s was a lot more quiet than how it is now. For one, cable TV was not really a household staple, which means that in the olden days you will see near zero programes on any TV channel on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Black Saturday. No such thing as HBO, AXN, CNN, and other round-the clock programmes. If you do have some luck in finding something to watch on television, it would either be a mass, a religious talk show, or TV series that either commemorate the life and times of Jesus Christ or are religious inspired.
As a child, I spend most of my summer vacations in the beach or in the highlands. However, in the Holy Week, we were either at home in my childhood apartment in Caloocan (one of the cities that make up Metro Manila) or at the ancestral home in Pampanga. Our family is not exactly very religious, but going out during the Holy Week for the sake of having a getaway holiday is quite unheard of in our household.
I definitely remember 3 outstanding Holy Week movies/TV series which I enjoyed watching as a child. In recent years I would flip channels and somehow pine for these kinds of old films that are classic. Personally these movies that I used to see every Holy Week of my childhood are ethereal, and while anyone can buy the DVDs or watch them on YouTube, I sure wish they could be shown on TV as well.
Imagine yourself to be in Manila, circa late 1970s, one Maundy Thursday. You sit in front of the television set and turn it on. Chances were that you will see any one of these films:
1. “EL CRISTO DEL OCEANO” (“The Christ Of The Ocean”)
A very old film, shot sometime 1970 in Spain. It is about an orphan who was cared for by a fisherman who eventually was lost at sea during a gale. The story eventually revealed that the statue of the Christ, found floating in the beach (hence, the Christ of the ocean) and placed in the church, would be found lying on the platform, detached from its crucifix, in spite of the fact that the said crucifix was new and expensive-looking. Said orphan met a man named Emmanuel at the beach, who showed the boy the cross where the statue of the Christ should be. This cross turned out to be remnants of the boat of of the boy’s adoptive father. After some disagreements, the priests were finally convinced that the wooden cross should be put in use when they noted that the statue no longer detached itself from the cross. Apparently, as will be revealed in the film, the man Emmanuel was The Christ. The orphan eventually discovers that he was not an orphan at all: his mother came to fetch him from the church at the end of the film.
It was kind of difficult to find a synopsis for this film online, so I constructed the gist out of memory. When I was a child, I would watch this film on TV from a distance, because I did not want my mother to see me cry (LOL). I simply love this beautiful film.
2. “MARCELINO PAN Y VINO”

An even older film. The original Spanish version was shot sometime in the 1950s. What I remember was the Filipino version that starred a young Romnick Sarmenta. This film clip is from the original version, though.
The film is about an orphan boy who was adopted by the monks. This boy grew up to be quite mischievous, but things changed when he chanced upon the statue of Jesus Christ on the cross when he ventured in the attic of the monastery in secrecy. Marcelino started bring bread and wine to the statue: the statue would come to life and take the food brought to him. The monks soon noticed that bread and wine in the kitchen would decrease, and, having seen the boy yet sneak out another supply, they followed him to the attic. It was at this point that the boy, having been pensive the whole time, confessed to the animated statue of the Christ that he would like to see his mother, and the mother of the Christ. The Christ cradled the boy in his arms and told him to sleep. The monks, who were spying through the cracks on the wall, were stupefied by this sight, and by the time they had the guts to open the door, they found Marcelino dead, lying in the arms of the statue of the Christ.
3. “JESUS OF NAZARETH”
I first saw this film (which was actually released as a mini-series) in the moviehouse, and even as a child, I thought that it was so grand. Later on this was shown on television in segments. Many years and many actors who played Jesus in various venues later, I still believe that Robert Powell is the best actor to have ever played Jesus. The story is actually a combination of the accounts on the life and times of Jesus (from Nativity to Resurrection and beyond) by the four authors of the Gospel: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

The film was such a huge project made up of a powerhouse cast: Robert Powell, Olivia Hussey, Anne Bancroft, James Earl Jones, Laurence Olivier (wow), and was shot in location in Tunisia and Morocco. You can read about the details here.
In the past, I watched all three films every Holy Week, until the networks pulled them out. I can no longer remember when this was. What can definitely say, though, is that these three films were an integral part of my Holy Week in Manila during my growing up years, and that their themes and cinematic aesthetics will always remain classic and will surely withstand the test of time.

ANG PUTING PAPEL NA NILAGYAN NG ITIM NA TULDOK

Your Heart Today.wmv (With Lyrics)

A prayer song adapted from the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, seeking God’s grace for witnessing.

“ANG PUTING PAPEL NA NILAGYAN NG ITIM NA TULDOK”

AY ISANG PUTING PAPEL NA HINDI NA MAGIGING PUTI

HABAMBUHAY.

DAHIL IYON AY NILAGYAN NA NG ISANG ITIM NA TULDOK.

KAPAG ANG ISANG PUTING PAPEL AY NADUMIHAN NA,

HINDI NA IYON MAGIGING KUMPLETO SA PAGIGING PUTI

DAHIL MAYROON NA SIYANG DUMI-

ISANG ITIM NA TULDOK.

MINSAN, ISANG MANUNULAT ANG HUMINGI NG PAYO

SA ISANG CELEBRITY NA NAGNGANGALANG RICKY REYES…

UMIYAK ANG MANUNULAT NA IYON SA HARAPAN NG KANYANG KAIBIGAN.

ISA LAMANG ANG NAITUGON NI GINOONG REYES SA MANUNULAT:

“ANG ISANG PUTING PAPEL KAPAG NADUMIHAN NA, HINDI NA IYON MAGIGING PUTI

HABAMBUHAY…

KAYA HIJO, TANGGAPIN MO NA LANG ANG GUSTO NILA, BASTA IPAGPATULOY MO NA LAMANG

ANG IYONG GAWAIN.”

SAPAT NA SIGURO IYON..,

NA MATANGGAP NIYA ANG LAHAT.

DAHIL SA PAGIGING KAPOS NIYA SA MGA BAGAY-BAGAY,

SIYA’Y NATULIGSA, PINATAY, KINUTYA.

MINSAN SA ISANG PANAHON, NABUHAY DIN SIYA.

PERO NASAKTAN SIYA.

KAYA WALA NA SIYA, MATAGAL NA.

HINAHANAP PA RIN NIYA ANG SARILI NIYA NGAYON.

SIGURO, NAKAGAWA DIN SIYA NG MAGANDA

NAGKAROON DIN SIYA NG MGA “KAIBIGAN”…

BAGO SIYA NAWALA, TUMAKAS AT TUMAKBO.

NGAYON, NARIRITO MULI SILA.

IPAGPAPATULOY ANG MGA GAWAING NASIMULAN NA.

PARA SA PUTING PAPEL

AT SA ISANG KAIBIGANG

NILAGYAN NILA NG ITIM NA TULDOK-

HABAMBUHAY.

HABANG may buhay, may pag-asa.

Little miracles are happening everywhere. People just refuse to notice. People just keep on running after some other things, rather than seek and find the true meaning of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice for their lives.

In Lance Raymundo’s life, little miracles just keeps on happening. That’s why on his upcoming Senakulo play, wherein he’s going to portray the role of the Lord Jesus Christ, he is giving all his soul and feelings to fully give justice to his demanding “role” as Christ.

Here is our 15 minutes Question & Answer interview with one of the most-loved actors of this generation- Mr. Lance Raymundo.

LANCENEW

SSSIP: Lance, you’ve started with the rehearsals of Senakulo 2015 by Teatro Sta. Ana. Were you carried-away with some scenes in your portrayal as Jesus Christ?

LANCE: Yes, I was really carried-away with some scenes. Pinaka-na-carried-away ako du’n sa mga scenes wherein Jesus Christ have started to suffer. Especially the Agony in the Garden scene. Because you see, I went through with the same physical and emotional sufferings myself when I experienced my accident last year. I never questioned why it had to happen to me, though. Maybe God Has his own reasons why… But contrary to what I thought, no amount of pain and suffering can be as greater as that of jesus Christs’s suffering. He carried the sins of everyone.

Kaya I really got so emotional during our rehearsals. Minsan, hindi ko mapigilang umiyak. But I have to control my tears, because I know, as a theater actor, I should know when to use my tears and my emotions on proper ways. Kaya thakful ako, I am sorrounded by people like Lou Veloso and Bernardo Bernardo, mga elders and veterans in the theater scene na tumulong sa akin sa paggamit ko ng proper emotions ko sa acting.

SSSIP: It’s almost one year today since your accident, how emotional can you get this time ba?

LANCE: My accident last year didn’t affect me emotionally, but spiritually. In better words, I was more touched on it spiritually. When I medidate at times, I ask Jesus Christ why did he allow me to live again? Why did he give me this second chance at life? I guess, more answers to that question of mine will be seen by me soon.

SSSIP: How do you find working again with theater people? Especially the likes of Mr. Lou veloso, the director of the Senakulo, and Mr. Bernardo Bernardo who became your acting coach in this religious play?

LANCE: This time, I can say I am more mature. I am more giving and more humble. I am more open this time to open my doors for more knowledge on acting onstage. Feeling ko kasi, marami pa akong dapat na ibigay within me. That’s why I sought the help of Lou Veloso and Bernardo Bernardo, and they both gave me the best advices and tips on acting again onstage.

I believe, that being a part of this Senakulo and this group of theater people, hindi yung pagalingan sa isa’t-isa ang dapat na pairalin, eh. You work as a team. You will perform a show as a whole. So this new learnings was helping me all-throughout, not only as an actor, but as a person as well.

LANCENEW2

SSSIP: What are your expectations to the crowd or the audience who’ll all gonna watch you perform as Jesus Christ?

LANCE: I can’t have much expectations. The Senakulo was actually made for the masses. So, I am preparing myself for anything. On how the audience will react, it’s up to them. Basta ang hiling ko lang, they will be touched by the story of Jesus.

SSSIP: Maiba na tayo ng topic, lance. What are your plans this Summer of 2015 and the Holy Week itself?

LANCE: I plan that after our final performance in Baguio of the Senakulo, gusto ko munang magpa-iwan sa Baguio with my family and have a short break there. After that, I plan to move-on with my career na. I am positive and looking forward to greater horizons on my career this time.

As of now, my manager, Shandi bacolod, told me na pasok daw ako sa next film project ni direk Ato Bautista. So I may probably be very busy shooting again after Holy Week. I am also starting to host a travel show for ANC channel. It’s show na bibistahin ko ang mga scenic places dito sa Pilipinas. And I am now open for possible new TV shows or teleseryes. I missed acting on TV.

SSSIP: Last question, Lance. Who is Jesus Christ in your life?

LANCE: Jesus Christ is the center of my life, Robert.

LANCE WITH THEATER ACTORS OF TEATRO STA. ANA DURING THEIR PRESS CONFERENCE OF "HESUS, ANG SENAKULO" RECENTLY
LANCE WITH THEATER ACTORS OF TEATRO STA. ANA DURING THEIR PRESS CONFERENCE OF “HESUS, ANG SENAKULO” RECENTLY

“Mom, don’t worry. I will be okay. I will be fine.”

Just a step away from death.

At isang milagro, NABUHAY NGA SI LANCE. AT NAGKAROON PA NG PANIBAGONG “MUKHA”.

That was almost one year ago from today. Nu’ng huling makita ng blogger si Lance just a month ago sa isang merienda treat, naitanong pa ni Lance sa blogger na ito: “Did your angels helped me out in those times, Robert?”

I can say that this is a little miracle on my part.”

Tatlong HIMALA.

OO, PADATING NA SI HESUS MULI NGAYONG HOLY WEEK.

PANOORIN NATIN SIYA, SA PAMAMAGITAN NI LANCE RAYMUNDO NA GAGANAP SA KANYANG PAPEL.

AT MULI, TAYO’Y LULUHA.

AT AAKAPIN NATIN SIYA.

MAGPAKAILANMAN.
