BERNARDO BERNARDO: IN YESTERYEARS, AT THE PRIME OF HIS CAREER AS A GREAT THEATER ACTOR!

Higante… pero malaya.

Mailap… pero mapagmahal.

Matapang. Bihasa. Beterano. Magaling.

Kaya nagbalik ako, and I hope, this time, it’s for good.”

“The movie was a collaborative effort”, dagdag na sabi pa niya. “It was a one-act play na pinahaba namin ng pinahaba.

I dedicated the award to all the OFW’s living abroad.

“I suffered from severe depression nu’ng nanirahan ako sa Amerika. Frankly, I must tell you now, nu’ng nagpakamatay si Robin Williams na Hollywood actor, naka-relate ako sa kanya. Oo, I admit to you, I suffered from a mild bipolar disease when I was in the U.S., pero salamat naman at nalabanan ko. Salamat at hindi ako natigok. Hahaha!

BERNARDO2 BERNARDO

“If I will still have another more 20 years of living on this earth, I will do that! Hahaha! But I love to teach, for me, it’s an exchange of energies between you and the one you’re teaching to.

May pusong makabayan at makatao.

Noon, magpasa-hanggang ngayon.”

KAHANGA-HANGA KA TALAGA, BERNARDO B.!

tessie lagman: an icon in the field of radio broadcasting now joins the acting scene

tessie lagman: never too late on movie and tv acting than never
tessie lagman: never too late on movie and tv acting than never

Tessie Lagman’s journey into the world of her broadcasting career, we could say, is “one for the books”. It’s a journey of great calm and strong will, added with colors of laughter, accomplishments and dedication. One could consider her as a real ICON in the field of radio broadcasting. Because she has managed to stay there for more than two decades now.

She started as an ordinary provinciana lass, fresh from her graduation in high school education.

“I at once was offered to become a radio broadcaster for DZXT”, Tessie started saying to a blogger. “The year was 1964. I was very young. And that started it all.

“After that, when I was already in College, I joined the DZTC radio broadcasting network. And the rest was history.”

But a few years after, Tessie discovered another hidden talent- and that was singing. She joined a popular singing contest on TV during the early ’70’s- Tawag Ng Tanghalan. And she became a Champion in that T.V. singing contest for five long weeks.

“ABS-CBN saw me after”, Tessie continued saying. “And they invited me to join them in their radio network. It was D’WOW radio. I joined them also in the radio program Operetang Putol-Putol wherein I sang and act on that radio program which was a musical-variety. I was made then to choose between my broadcasting career and my singing career. I chose my broadcasting career, of course. My singing career just became my second priority.”

Tessie’s broadcasting career over ABS-CBN  lasted then until the Martial Law during the late ’70’s. Then she transfered to RBS radio broadcasting network of the late Bob Stewart. She had a radio program there over DZBB, together with German Moreno.

Her program over DZBB was an advice radio program, dealing with matters of the heart and problems on life- wherein she had to give heartfelt advice and console letter-senders. Almost like the late Helen Vela who’s known for her Lovingly Yours, Helen.

(ms. tessie lagman’s golden voice during her youth, thanks to: limva123 for uploading it on youtube.com)

ONCE THERE WAS A LOVE – Tessie Lagman

But in-between her broadcasting career, Tessie recorded songs. Her most popular was “Once There Was A Love”, her own cover of the popular Jose Feliciano song during those years. This song-cover of hers is still so popular up to now.

“Charlie Lozo of Bangis online radio once played that song on his radio program”, Tessie happily said. “And to his amazement, he got so many unlimited requests to play the song over and over again on his radio program. He contacted me afterwards and told me that I still have so many fans. And that jumpstarted it all back again for people to remember me once more.”

Soon after, Mr. Charlie Lozo, the publicist of the movie Butanding (which just had its last shooting day a few days back), asked Tessie for a meeting with director Ed Palmos (also the director of Butanding) at Mcdonald’s restaurant. Tessie got the biggest amazement of her life when direk Ed offered her a good role in the film.

“I asked direk Ed at that time- Direk, totoo ba talaga ang sinasabi mo? I couldn’t believe it!”, Tessie revealed to a blogger. “He’s willing to transform me into a character actress. And he told me- Kaya mo ‘yan, Tessie. With direk Ed’s good convincing power and charm, I answered yes finally. And true to his word, he abled to transform me- I mean, napaarte niya ako. He motivated me so well during our shooting days that I was able to portray the role of an offbeat character fully well.”

A blogger watched Tessie Lagman during the last day of shoot of the film Butanding. And indeed, the radio icon could act ACT. She was so good in every scene. Most of all in heavy dramatic higlights which were so physically and emotionally-draining, Ms. Tessie delivered great and good.

Yes, indeed. The ICON in the field of radio broadcasting is now deep into the acting scene. She never expected it. It just came. And she’s now more open for more acting jobs and tasks soon.

Director Ed Palmos, who’s so satisfied with Tessie’s capacity as an actress, is considering her once more in his upcoming next movie project right after Butanding. And Tessie also wants to appear in some TV teleseryes if offers will come her way.

“I am entering a new journey of my life, that, I can say now”, Tessie said in the end. “And I am happy that people still support me. Because I never left.”

Tayong lahat ay naglalakbay dahil may hinahanap tayo. O marahil, may gusto tayong tuklasin, sagutin, at namnamin…

Ang kanyang pagpapakumbaba samantalang she’s already an icon in the field of broadcasting ay tunay namang kahanga-hanga.

Kakabusog talaga. Naka-limang slices of chocolates yata ang nakain ng blogger na ito just in one sitting. Haha.

Anyway, balik tayo kina Norris John at Denz Salcines.

Napakagaan at napakasarap ding ka-kuwentuhan ni Father Chris, and at once, nakipag-bonding siya sa buong grupo nina Mam Tessie, Kuya Ernie, Norris, Denz and the rest…

Very physically and emotionally-draining ang eksenang iyon.

Kakainis… Haha. Pipigilan namin siyang umalis, pramis.

FAST CUT TO:

MAGPAKAILANMAN.

rald: like a child in looks, but a grown-up man in deeds
rald: like a child in looks, but a grown-up man in deeds

“It feels so great, Tito Robert, very overwhelming”, nawika pa ni Gerald sa isang blogger. Matagal din akong hindi nagkaroon ng MTV, and I miss doing it.

Meanwhile, busy din si Gerald sa mga darating niyang shows and concerts, especially this month of February.

“On February 9 po, we’ll be going to Hongkong”, kuwento ni Gerald. “Magkakaroon ako ng concert du’n. Aside from that, I’ll be having some campus tours- mostly po ay mga public schools all-over Metro Manila.

It’s my biggest yet and it’s going to be on a bigger venue para po ma-accomodate ko ang lahat ng fans ko. Either Music Museum, Sky Dome or Resorts World po ang pinagpipilian namin.”

And no doubt about it, solong-solo na ngayon ni Gerald ang titulong Prince of Ballad! Dapat sana’y karibal nioya sa titulong ito ang singer na si Ronnie Liang, but since Ronnie opted to soar further his horizons by becoming an actor now, nabakante ng di-oras ang trono ng pagkakaroon ng karibal ni Gerald sa titulong “Prince of Ballad” nga.

What can Gerald say about this?

Mas competitive kasi ako kapag may kalaban ako. Like Nora & Vilma, Gary & Martin, Kuh Ledesma & Zsazsa Padilla.. The more I will strive harder and do better pa rin.

Hehehe.”

Meanwhile, heto naman ang masasabi ni Gerald ukol sa bago niyang kantang Because I Love You:

“‘Yung image ko po ngayon as a singer ay akmang-akma sa bago kong kantang Because I Love You“, sabi ni Gerald. “Gusto ko kasi, magaan naman ang mga kantang aawitin ko this time na pawang original compositions. May certain lightness. Cute ang dating and will appeal the younger generation.

When you see a kind white man, tall, dignified and almost looking like a Santa Claus or God- as he holds a wide lens camera object on his hand- that can be Mr. Don Gordon Bell.

On big special film events, he could be that gentle mature man. On occasions like Cinema One Digital Fest or Cinemalaya Indie Fest, definitely, he’s there. For he so loved the glitter and the glory of Philippine Cinema.

And who is, really, Mr. Don Gordon Bell? Is he really a professional media photographer by nature? You may ask, but you’d be confuse. As you looked upon him more discreetly, you might know, he’s not just a photographer. HE IS SOMEBODY ELSE. Maybe, more deeper than that.

And you’d smile, having him around.  You’d feel important, being with him… being beside him in a group or in a special lunch treat.

But you’d soon feel overwhelmed by the humility of this great white man of Korean-Indian Apache ancestry. There’s never an “air of attitude or discrimination” within his friendly nature. But only, his overwhelming “father-like” nature and sincerity.

And he is here to STAY.

MR. DON GORDON BELL.

“I have appeared in 30 international films and fifty Filipino films”, Don answered to a blogger while they were having coffee and snacks. “It was my appearance in the classic film Apocalypse Now (opposite Marlon Brando) that made me land in Filipino films. I also became a professional commercial and print ads model during those times.”

In 1973 to 1975, Don’s visit to the Philippines extended for 10 long years because he fell in love with the kindness of Filipino people. It was through his longtime pal, photographer John Silao that he got to land in the Philippines.

“Me and John were College students and buddies”, Don charmingly recalled. “He invited me to Manila for a brief stay of two years. His mom was a great cook, and that started it. When I met lots of friends here, I stayed for 10 more years.”

And now he’s back.

“It was director Aureaus Solito who opened again the doors for me to make a comeback in Filipino films”, Don quipped. “It was through Facebook that we corresponded. He invited me to appear in the movie Baybayin– a film about the language of Palawenos. And that started it all. I played a role of a white man there married to a Filipina character.”

Don was next seen in the movie Pedro Calungsod: Ang Batang Martir as a Spanish military man. In that movie, he only had brief scenes, but you could distinctly see him on the background emoting his character with great conviction. A fine actor, indeed.

But in Don’s forthcoming movie Gemini, directed by maverick indie film director- Ato Bautista, Don will play a rather very intriguing role that required deep characterization and internalization.

“I will play the role of a Psychologist doctor there who’s the father of a twin girl”, Don said. “The twin girls there are the major characters of the film. And one of them will be murdered and die. After the death of one twin girl, mysterious incidents will start to appear. The other twin will have visions, dreams and will feel the pains of her twin sister who died. Such an intriguing story, isn’t it?”

Don also appeared last year in Mga Alaala Ng Tag-Ulan, also directed by Ato Bautista, but he was only a background bit player there. he accepted the film to support director Ato. Before that, he also appeared in the film In Nominee Matris by Hubo Productions.

In the international movie scene, Don’s favorite films of his were: Dog TagsWarbus, Nightmare (the original and first Nightmare On Elm Street),  and Red Roses For Diana, the film wherein he met local Filipino actress and beauty queen Ms. Maria Isabel Lopez.

“Maria Isabel is the best person I have met in Philippine showbiz”, Don revealed to this blogger. “She opened the doors for me and introduced me to many people in the many events we had attended the previous year. She’s so supportive of me.”

And aside from Maria Isabel, Don also credits young photographer Erickson dela Cruz for helping him out learn more things about Photography.

“I am not really a professional photographer, you see”, Don said again. “I am more of an actor. And Erickson taught me new techniques, thanks to him. But you see, I am also inventive. That’s me by nature. Some movie people got amazed on my inventions on camera techniques whenever they hire me as unit stills photographer on film shoots.”

During that two-hour interview-talk with a blogger, Don shared a lot more about his personal life. It was of epic proportions! Almost like an epic novel to write about.

And this blogger promised to write about that personal story of Don. Sooooooon.

Aside from Maria Isabel Lopez, director Ato Bautista and photographer Erickson dela Cruz, Don also finds actors Lance Raymundo and Mon Confiado so nice and great to him.

“When Mon saw my military tattoo on my arm, he knew it was real”, Don said again. “He asked me if I really served in the Vietnam war, I told him YES. I didn’t only serve, I actually fought and was a member of an elite team. And Lance, he’s always friendly to me. That’s why I find them good and supportive to me as a foreign actor landing film roles here in the Philippines.”

In the meantime, this is all for now regarding Mr. Bell. .. Mr. Don Gordon Bell. More to come from him soon.

Because…

Definitely.

MR. DON GORDON BELL IS HERE TO STAY.

“bonifacio: isang zarzuela”: a gathering of new and established psf theater performers in one monumental play!

As they all lined-up in PSF Studio’s center stage to face the media bloggers in an open-forum, I almost saw ‘the soul’ of Philippine Theater coming-out ALIVE.

Sometimes, I could look straightly into their very eyes as they face me from the audience area, but sometimes, too, I could just look at the ceiling up above and feel some hidden ‘entities’ there…

Their presence was too strong, so penetrating. SO ALIVE.

The male and female actors of Philippine Stagers Foundation (PSF), as they gathered anew in their latest forthcoming new play entitled: “Bonifacio, Isang Zarzuela”.

YES, THEY WERE ALL STANDING AND SITTING  AT THE FRONT OF ME. At that very time, that very moment- in an almost “ad-infinity-essence-like” of TIME.

They announced to the media bloggers that they will all be very busy on their rehearsals for the play- daily, from 10 A.M. to 10 P.M. – for one whole month.

In addition, new talent sensations of psf (who recently graduated from psf acting workshop) will be introduced in the play, playing brief but important roles.

They all had voice lessons because they will all sing in zarzuela in this play.

All of them were now studying fully the assigned roles or characters they’re about to portray. Preparing inch by inch, in every detail and nuances, up to their physical transformations.

Just like what Hollywood actors are doing. They also prepare much for the roles given to them.

As young PSF actor Jomar Tanada Bautista puts-it: “Sir, did you notice that something changed in my face? I had to develop my looks and personality because as an actor, we are entitled for it. I had to study and do my homework in preparation for this play.”

PSF “man” Vince Tanada did a good job harnessing these group of theater actors into very fine performers.

Vince is going to be the one to portray Andres Bonifacio (whom, many say that should have been the Philippine National Hero), and alternating with him is handsome PSF actor JM Encinas.

When this blogger asked JM if he’s afraid to compete with the PSF “main man”-Vince- by alternating with him the role of Bonifacio in this play, he quickly replied:

“No, sir”, he answered. “Sir Vince is the one who taught me hard to become a fine actor. He’s so supportive of me.”

Another blogger, meanwhile, asked Vince if he’s ready for the criticisms that might come for his forthcoming play from “Pro-Aguinaldo’s” group (since he told the media bloggers that in this play, he’ll show to everyone that Bonifacio was really somehow ‘murdered’?  by Emilio Aguinaldo and that the play will favor more on the side of Bonifacio), Vince was also quick to answer:

“Yes, I am ready!”

This play, by the way, was also written by Mr. Tanada himself and he’ll also be directing it. This is going to be his “darkest” play so far- “With lots of bloody scenes and battles and killings right there onstage”, he said.

A gathering of “new breed of theater performers” would now soon show to the students and mostly, to the young people the real HISTORY of the Filipino people. And how Bonifacio greatly offered his life for every filipino individual’s LIBERTY from the Spanish regime during the 1800’s.

Right there onstage, in flickering lights, in LIVE MOTION, and in an artistic way of presenting it, under the hands of an outstanding theater man (Mr. Vince T.) . . .

As they all impressed more fully this blogger with the way they answered the questions on that Q & A moment, definitely, the stars will shine a lot more brighter as the play “Bonifacio” Isang Zarzulea” opens on July 19, 2013, to jumpstart the new theater season of Philippine Stagers Foundation.

WALANG HANGGAN: A GATHERING OF “DRAGON FIREFLIES”

the major cast of WALANG HANGGAN.

WALANG HANGGAN: A GATHERING OF “DRAGON FIREFLIES”

(a deep look on the country’s number one teleserye: “Walang Hanggan”, written by robert manuguid silverio)

Angst, pain, anger…

Bitterness, sorrow, acceptance…

LOVE, FORGIVENESS AND ETERNITY.

These are the overwhelming words that best describes the unique plot and conflicts in the country’s number one television series – “Walang Hanggan”.

But more than that, it is the set of actors who portrays the diversity of characters that made this ‘teleserye’ shine so bright. Like fireflies. Like dragons, too…. Or better still, dragon fireflies.

Fireflies creates light.

And the one who creates so much light in this teleserye is no less than Mr. Paulo Avelino, with his very intense portrayal to the character of ‘Nathan’, a young man so obssesed with his wife and very much misunderstood by everyone.

PAULO: the most intense actor for this blogger, among all the cast of WALANG HANGGAN.

A character like this is so hard to portray, given the many demands of the role itself and the internal conflicts and dark phantoms that a young, educated man of that character would encounter.

Paulo Avelino, the actor, didn’t hesitate to conquer and replenish the role. He went deeper into that character, portraying it so deviously, but gaining the much-needed sympathy in his low and crying moments of failure. Somehow, the audience would ‘feel’.

rita avila: a subdued, overwhelming performance in WALANG HANGGAN.

Miss Rita Avila is another “firefly” in this teleserye. Her unique acting style is in ‘parallelism’ with the new trend of acting techniques, commonly used now in Hollywood. It’s subtle, subdued, ‘ungraspable’.

The likes of Meryl Streep, Natalie Portman and Michelle Williams uses this kind of acting technique. “No acting, please”. No total, trying-hard ‘effort’. Only with slight movements, the feeling could be conveyed.

In the June 5 (2012) episode of “Walang Hanggan”, when Ms. Avila (as Jane) saw, together with Miss Helen Gamboa (who portrays the ‘evil Margaret’), the very delicate scene of Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta (as Marco and Emily, the ‘ill-fated’ lovers of this teleserye)) in the gardens of the Montenegro mansion, with a tight embrace and their lips almost touching the infinity- “Jane”, Ms. Avila’s character, painfully turned around. But the very subtle movement of her back’s turn was the most remarkable gesture of that episode. A deeper meaning… that, something’s going to happen… very soon.

And Ms. Rita Avila acted it out with great composure and depth.

INFINITY, ETERNITY, EVRLASTING… richard-dawn & coco-julia in “walang hanggan”.

If Paulo and Rita were fireflies, Miss Dawn Zulueta, Susan Roces, Helen Gamboa and Richard Gomez were DRAGONS.

Dawn, Susan, Helen and Richard are so HUGE in this teleserye. Almost like “larger than life”. Eventhough they may tend to ‘overact’ in those many dramatic highlights and “heart-popping” scenes, it was so GREAT ‘coz their respective characters called for it.

A great gathering of actors, a great unison of seasoned performers- could lead to a totally-exciting TV series.

The directors of this teleserye, namely:

Jerry Lopez Sineneng,
Trina N. Dayrit and
Jojo A. Saguin

They exactly knew what they’re doing. The right camera angles, the proper blocking, the music, the flashbacks, the motivating of actors, the fast-paced scenes with no redundancy and the good texture. Undeniably, these directors were so highly motivated with their awesome creative ideas.
“Walang Hanggan” didn’t fail do deliver the expectations.

Though there were moments in a recent rewind back, in the early weeks of May episodes, that, many critics and avid viewers of this teleserye questioned the ‘sudden changes’ in the development of characters of the plot, especially that of Nathan’s character and to Miss Susan Roces’ character-, the scriptwriters eventually got out of the “maze”.

The early days of June 2012 episodes proved them all wrong. There were reasons behind the sudden adjustments of each of the characters of this teleserye.

Nathan could be kind but deceiving.

Virginia (Ms. Susan Roces’ character) could be patient but victorious.

Marco, unchanged and unfazed.

Emily, undaunted.

Katarina (Julia Montes), overwhelming.

And Daniel (Coco Martin)- the over-all SAVIOUR.

Others in the cast all provided the best acting talents ever seen on television- most of all to the two QUEENS- Ms. Susan Roces and Ms. Helen Gamboa, again. Even the supporting players like Mr. Noni Buencamino, Richard Yap, Ogie Diaz, Arlene Muhlach and Nanding Josef were so good.

But the younger actors would always steal the “show”. Melissa Ricks’ very refreshing face on TV is one worth look, Joem Bascon’s ruggedness is so appealing and Julia, with Coco, simply knows their way in- into the very hearts of the TV viewers.

What will happen next in the story of this teleserye that was inspired from the novel of Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights”? Will someone really die on that chartered plane crash in Cebu City?

Will Jane forever bear the pains of seeing his husband Marco still so much in love with Emily?

Will Daniel take a brave turn to save Katarina from the obsessive bondage created by Nathan?

Will Emily soon reveal her softness and tender heart of an everlasting love to the only man who stole her heart?

And will evil Margaret do more steps that can destroy the lives of the people she loves?

As the plot thickens, the gathering of these great “dragon fireflies” continues to shine on ABS-CBN Channel 2. “Walang Hanggan” is one TV series that’s worth your time every night, right after having a happy supper time.

The cast, the writers, the directors and all other creative people involved in this teleserye have all created something new, something wonderful- . . .

That, Philippine television would forever redeem its GLORY.
