“I remain unpolitical”, bungad na sabi ni direk Frannie Zamora sa isang blogger in one casual conversation. “But I think, it’s VP bet Alan Peter Cayetano who should be credited for Rodrigo Duterte’s phenomenal rise as a future President of this country.
“Because artists are open individuals”, sagot ni direk Frannie.
They are now seeking for new idols and leaders na gagabay sa kanila.”
Naniniwala din kasi siya sa sinseridad ni Duterte to uplift the Philippines, our own beloved country.
And let’s give Duterte a chance to prove his worth.
“Kaya Duterte-Cayetano ako, sila ang iboboto ko!”, pagtatapos na sabi ni direk Frannie Zamora, the award-winning director of the theater world, who recently won as Best Director for a Musical Play sa Aliw Awards.
Let’s talk about the “mood”, the authenticity of feelings revealed, the texture, the VISION.
Now, let’s stare and look at the other details- the universal message, the subtle lighting design, the music, the stage design- which all comprehended with the TOTALITY of one man’s ACCURACY AND TOUCH in stage direction.
Among others, it’s the “genuineness” of his pure intentions, the everlasting effect and “slap” on the one who’s watching the theatrical production being presented on stage.
These and all, were the ones that made all the fascination and the wonders we felt when we watched Kanser @35: TheMusical last year.
The direction of Franniel Zamora was truly great. He had this “Midas Touch” of transforming every scene into a “gold-like picture of frames in living colors”. Especially that scene in which, Crisostomo Ibarra, alongside with Elias were rowing a boat on a river as they speak about a nation’s future and their respective beliefs on how to continue fighting for their fellow Filipinos. That scene alone, made us believe that direk Franniel had created a modern classic of a musical play.
Second to that scene was the finale scene. Wherein all the characters spoke and sang of their ashes being spread all-over the LAND. So that the passion and spirit for Nationalism would continue to live-on.
That finale scene made us cry. It stabbed our heart more deeper and penetrating. Just like we felt “being stabbed”, too, with the earlier scenes- because it always taught us something and made us feel guilty of the different kind of notion we have now for living in our beloved Philippines.
We have almost forgotten all those values and proper Filipino ethics that Dr. Jose Rizal have taught us. Not until we saw again direk Franniel’s version of Noli Me Tangere, via his musical play Kanser @35.
Because of his concise and truly magnificent directing style, Rizal’s everlasting message came alive.
And that’s how fascinating direk Franniel’s style of directing a play, was.
No wonder, he won the Best Director for a Musical Play at the Aliw Awards late last year.
“Robert, I am planning to direct an indie film based on my own life as a former ramp model turned singer and now a theater director”, sabi ni direk Franniel kay Blogger SSSIP.
This could be a good start for PJ Aguilar Ong’s upcoming movie career.
And this blogger guarantees that PJ can ACT and deliver. He is another GEM in the making!
Very attentive at eager ang lahat.
And now, the most important thing that happened that day ay ang pagdalo ng tinitingalang direktor sa teatro (who recently won as Best Director for a Musical Play sa nakaraang Aliw Awards) na walang iba kundi si direk Franniel Zamora. He shared some words of wisdom, acting techniques and advices. At babalik ulit siya sa 4th day of Acting Workshop to give them some physical and acting exercises naman.
Salamat din kay Mr. Edwin DC, our friend from Work With me Photography at sa kasamahan niyang photographer din na si Maro Francia. Talaga namang very supportive sila sa naganap na workshop.
AND NOW WE CAN SAY, MAGPAPATULOY ANG THE ELITES ACTING & MODELLING WORKSHOP. WALANG MAKAPIPIGIL SA AMEN. HINDI KAMI MGA “PABEBE” NA TULAD NG IBA DYAN. NEED I SAY MORE, DAD MARTIN? GO, GO, GO, ELITES!!!

The venue is going to be at the AFP Theater and performance schedules of “Kanser@35: The Musical” will be announced soon.
He recently won as Best Director for a Musical Play at Aliw Awards which was held last December. For many years, he has dedicated his life for the arts, at sa mga arts and theater circles na kinabibilangan niya, prominenteng-prominente ang visibility niya at socialization. Although he started it out as a singer, sa mundo ng teatro siya mas tiningala at mas hinangaan.
Direk Fran will share his thoughts on the art of Film and Theater acting.
Kaya naman ngayon pa lang, pinag-uusapan na sa showbiz circles ang “birth of a new actor” in person of PJ Aguilar Ong.

“Happy ako in all ways, Robert”, sey pa ni direk Franniel. So now, we are preparing na for out-of-town shows in the provinces.
“And they both did it! Yun ang bread and butter nila as singers, eh. Na-miss niya agad ang pag-arte sa teatro, it only means that way!
Oh, my!!!

Where are the real Filipinos now? Where do they hide and live? Where have all the intensity for Patriotism gone?
Did they live in the hearts of the Filipino youths of today? Or, like in the ending of the most powerful musical play ever staged in the history of Philippine Theater- “Kanser@35, The Musical” – the ashes of those great Filipinos who lived somewhere in time were scattered by the wind and dived deep into the ocean of infinity?
Where have all the true Filipinos’ hearts and souls lived? Were the sacrifices of all our Filipino ancestors left unnoticed and unloved? Or did they stay amidst the heart of one true great nation?
The fire didn’t simply extinguished. It stayed into the hearts of every Nationalistic Filipino, wanting change, justice and equality. Up to now.
The wisdom also lingered on. As long as the memory of one Crisostomo Ibarra or one Dr. Jose Rizal’s book on LOVE for his fellow Filipinos would be cherished in schools and universities.
But were they for real? And for keeps?
These are the questions that a blogger asked for himself after he watched the 35th year of presentation of the longest-running play to date in the history of legitimate stage production. And it now turned into a musical play- that is, “Kanser@35, The Musical”.
The all too-tragic ending of this musical play left one blogger into the sea of absolute eternity. It’s the kind of an artistic energy that made him dig deeper into the fathoms of his very soul. As he waned to stay there more longer, cherishing a long-forgotten past of his Filipino identity. That kind of an artistic presentation that would want you to be gone for some time, because you lingered so much with your innermost feelings of passion, rage- and LOVE.
And that was it. For years he had been searching for the BEST. That kind of awesome feeling of wonderment. With a unison of specific craftsmanship- from the musical director, the choreographer, the stage design, the lighting, the stage blocking, the acting of the actors, and most of all, the direction. It’s the kind of unity that mixed all too-well, and the taste became so excellent.
We need not say now the names of the specific people involved in this great theatrical production, for they already know who they are. We bow to you, great artistic people of Gantimpala Theater Foundation. But we must not fail to mention the name of someone- Mr. Jun Pablo- who supported them all right from the very start. Without him, this rare kind of theater production won’t be put into reality.
Director Franniel Zamora, the director of this musical version of the classic adaptation on Dr. Jose Rizal’s novel Noli Me Tangere, made us transform into a “chameleon”, because he made us ride into a time machine- back into the past- well deep into the mind and heart of one Crisostomo Ibarra.
Direk Franniel’s vision was clearly seen through the scenes, the texture, the color, the power. He executed the scenes with proper care and love, so magnetic to look at, so transforming-but oh, so real.
We so love the scene of Ibarra and Elias as they rode together on a small boat- talking about their contrasting ideas on bravery and Nationalism. Next to it were those romantic scenes of Ibarra with Maria Clara. Very simple scenes, but overpowering with words of love.
Vien Alen King as Elias, Kate Alejandrino and Michaela Fajardo as Sisa, Norman Penaflorinda as Alperes and of course, Ms. Myramae Menesses as Maria Clara- yes, they were all too great in their portrayals as the classic characters of one great novel. Vien’s timing and raw emotions comprehended much with his interactions to his fellow actors, Kate and Michaela provided proper characterizations both as Sisa, Norman stole scenes every time he appeared on stage and Ms. Menesses’ voice was overwhelming and penetrating.
But on the end, one great new actor provided the very “soul” of this great (again, we repeat) musical play. Its lead actor, Michael Pangilinan is so far, the most intense, credible, sensitive, alluring and delicate kind of Crisostomo Ibarra that we had watched on stage. His kind of rawness and youthful attack on the Ibarra character was amazing, refreshing and all too-powerful to the naked eye. Kudos to you, Michael!
After we watched the play, we were commuted into a variety of feelings and we were gone in ecstatic zeniths of appreciation. This seldom happens to an artist-writer like us. It only means that, our thirst and our quench for the performing arts were truly delivered and fulfilled. It was a SPLASH!
Thank you, Gantimpala Theater Foundation for being the one to deliver that kind of artistic enchantment on me. We love you all, GTF people. More power!!
“KANSER@35, THE MUSICAL” IS THE GREATEST MUSICAL PLAY THAT EVERYONE MUST WATCH!!! THAT, WE GUARANTEE!!!
DIRECTOR’S NOTES: FRANNIEL ZAMORA
(AS WRITTEN BY MR. JOSELITO ‘TOOTS’ TOLENTINO)
ARTISTS AND ACTORS, IN PARTICULAR, TYPICALLY TALK ABOUT THAT LIFE-CHANGING REVELATION WHERE THEY DISCOVER, “THIS IS WHAT I NEED TO DO.” DID YOU EVER HAVE THAT EPIPHANY?
Everything came out natural to me. In my 3rd grade, i already volunteered to choreograph and direct a dance number for the school presentation. At the age of 17, i already directed a fundraising concert of the church choir which was presented at the metropolitan theater.
I always have this passion for organizing and putting things together. It’s like putting together a puzzle to create the big picture.
Q: AS A YOUNG GENTLEMAN DRAWN IN A PREVIOUS CAREER PATH BACK IN YOUR 20’s, WHAT IS IT THAT EVENTUALLY PULLED YOU INTO THE PRACTICE AND INDUSTRY OF FASHION AND NOW, MUSICAL THEATER ?
A: i am a theatre artist and a bread winner, so i needed to find a job that will support my family. My being involved with fashion was meant for regular income. But i never really left the industry that i wanted to be part of. I designed costumes for theater plays, suits and gowns for friends in showbiz and outfits for live entertainment.
Q: WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE THEATRE THAT YOU LOVE MOST?
A: everything. Like what i have said, it’s the creating and putting together process that really keeps me loving what i do.
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON ‘KANSER@35 AS A MUSICAL THEATRE PIECE TODAY?
COULD YOU TELL US WHAT MAKES THIS MUSICAL SO SPECIAL ?
A: i always believed in the works of jose rizal. And i, as an artist, believe that i have the responsibility to educate the audience, most specially the young ones, of this masterpiece of our national hero. We need to do something to post awareness and promote our culture and heritage to the new generation.
The collaborative geniuses that work behind this production really make it special–the creative/artistic and production staff and the cast.
Q: IN DIRECTING ‘KANSER@35, WILL YOU BE ADDING OR SUBTRACTING A NEW TWIST TO THE MATERIAL WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY A STRAIGHT PLAY ? IF SO, WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE INVOLVED WITH SUCH A UNIQUELY DIFFERENT AND UPDATED PRESENTATION OF THIS NEW MUSICAL ?
A: i already did the subtracting and adding (with the permission of the writer) when i first directed kanser in 1992 and was staged in ccp maintheater. But the updated version which is 98% singing, adds more spice and drama and excitement to each scene. The blending of the music, choreography, voices and portrayal of the actors— something to watch out for.
Q: HOW DID YOU PREPARE YOURSELF FOR ‘KANSER@35 AS A DIRECTOR ? AND HOW DID YOU PREPARE THE CAST FOR THEIR RESPECTIVE ROLES ?
A:i reviewed my notes. Read my noli book again. I watched several plays. Contemplated on what i really want to bringforth in this musical staging. And stumbled on 3 vital elements—the brain, the heart, and the courage.
We conducted a week long workshop for the actors that tackled voice, dance and acting. I let them read and research.
Q: DO YOU BELIEVE IN ‘ENSEMBLE ACTING’ — DOES IT TAKE A MORE CHALLENGING TWIST IN YOUR DIRECTORIAL CHORES WHEN THIS SCHOOL OF ACTING IS APPLIED ?
A: yes. It is more challenging to put together an ensemble on the same energy and performance. It is double work because you have to deal with each and every actor to serve and work for a unified performance.
Q: WHAT WILL MAKE A SHOW LIKE ‘KANSER@35 SO VASTLY DIFFERENT THAN THE OTHER SHOWS THAT ARE BEING PRODUCED BY OTHER THEATRE COMPANIES ?
A: it is an original filipino material. It is the longest running filipino play. It has reached over a million viewers. And that what makes it different and challenging. I can’t imagine myself directing an english play. Don’t get me wrong, i love, watch and support foreign and english play but a big part of my being a theater actor would mean promoting filipino plays.
Q: RECENTLY A LOT HAS BEEN SAID ABOUT THE CURRENT STATE OF THE MUSICAL THEATRE SCENE: THE ONSLAUGHT OF NEW THEATER COMPANIES, THE STRUGGLING ECONOMY AND TICKET PRICES, THE NEW GENERATION OF THEATER AUDIENCES, AND MORE. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE CURRENT STATE OF THE MUSICAL THEATER INDUSTRY HERE IN OUR COUNTRY ?
A: theater is always on the struggle, moreso, theater companies that produce original filipino plays and musicals. It is dissappointing that our government and other private sectors neither support nor patronize the works of our fellow filipino artists.
But! Surprisingly, they watch and mind you, buy tickets if the play is from broadway. I am wishing that our local plays receive such support from fellow filipinos.
Q: IF YOU WERE TO WRITE AND DIRECT A NEW FILIPINO MUSICAL, WHAT WOULD BE THAT DREAM PROJECT AND WHY ?
A: i want to create a musical that will highlight the real hero behind our national hero— “paciano”, the brother of jose rizal. It is written that paciano made most of the sacrifices for rizal. I believe that it will be a very interesting revelation in our history. After all, in very success that a person achieve is an unsung hero.
