Monday, August 8, at the 12th Cinemalaya Film Festival offers the gala premiere of the Nora Aunor starrer Tuos by Roderick Cabrido at 6:15 pm at the CCP Main Theater.  In Tuos, an entry in the Full Length Feature category, the superstar plays a woman chosen to keep an age-old tradition alive and who must now choose between her granddaughter’s life and a belief that shackled her in solitary confinement.  Young actress Barbie Forteza portrays the granddaughter in the film

 

At 9 p.m. at the CCP Main Theater, Ang Bagong Pamilya ni Ponching by Inna Miren Salazar and Dos Ocampo, an entry in the Full Length Feature category, makes its gala premiere.  A dark comedy and light family drama, the film is about a naïve and religious text scammer who accidentally cons a rich family into thinking he is their late relative’s estranged son.

 

Paglipay (Crossing) by Zig Dulay will be screened in the Festival’s Best section at 12:45 pm at the CCP Little Theater.  Paglipay won the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Cinematography, People’s Choice, and the Best Supporting Actress in the ToFarm Film Festival 2016. The film focuses on ATAN, an Aeta from Baytan village in Zambales, who makes a living from traditional farming system kaingin and hunting on the foothills of Mt. Pinatubo. He enters into an arranged marriage but must pay the bride price. For that, he must cross the mountain river to another town to earn the money he needs. There, he struggles as he clashes with modernity.

 

Also in the Festival’s Best section is Mrs. by Adolfo Alix.  This film won Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Cinematography at the Sinag Maynila Film Festival 2016. Scheduled at 9 pm at the Tanghalang Huseng Batute, Mrs. is about Virginia who shares an old ancestral house with Delia, her ever-loyal maid.  However, Delia is marrying her long-time boyfriend and must leave.   Haunted by a past that Virginia tries to conquer- the disappearance of her only son Sonny Boy who disappeared years ago -what follows shows a portrait of a woman and a mother trying to juggle the sad realities of life in a cycle of life and death.

 

The Indie Nation section features Ringgo the Dog Shooter by Rahyan Carlos at 6:15 pm at the CCP Little Theater. The film is about the ties that bind Ringgo, whose work involves assisting and making sure dogs successfully mate and breed, his lesbian employer Bong, and a troubled Doberman named Inca. The film competed in the New Filipino Cinema program of the World Premieres Film Festival Philippines 2016 where it won the Second Best Picture Award, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay.

 

Entries to the Ika-28 Gawad CCP Para Sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video will be screened free of charge from 10 am-9 pm at the Tanghalang Manuel Conde.

 

Cinemalaya is a project of the Cinemalaya Foundation, the Cultural Center of the Philippines in partnership with Ayala Malls Cinemas.  Established in 2005, Cinemalaya is an all-digital film festival and competition that aims to discover, encourage and honor cinematic works of Filipino filmmakers.
