“CALL FOR APPLICANTS TO CINEMALAYA INSTITUTE”

THE Cinemalaya Foundation announces the opening of the Cinemalaya Institute in June 2015.

The Cinemalaya Institute will provide education, training and accreditation of practitioners in key aspects of film production.

The Cinemalaya Institute will be housed in the New Media, School of Arts & Design of the College of St. Benilde, the partner of Cinemalaya Foundation for this project.

The Cinemalaya Institute is a three semester intensive training program that will offer training in Writing, Directing, Production, Cinematography, Editing, Sound, Production Design Music Score and Acting. The courses will be offered in clusters, with the first cluster comprised of courses in Direction, Screenwriting and Production starting this June.

Introduction to Producing, on June 1-26, 2015, is a four week course that teaches students the fundamental skills and procedures used in managing the making of a film. John Paul Su will teach this production course. Su, an MFA degree holder from the NYU Tisch School of Arts Asia in Singapore and an award winning director who has produced news and feature programming for major media outlets around the world, including BBC World, Brazil’s Globo Network, Norway’s NRK Hortaland, and the Philippines’ ABS-CBN. In this course on production, students will examine the crew structure and the collaborative responsibilities of crew members, legal issues regarding agreements, rights, copyright and trademark clearances, insurance, location permits, talent agreements, scheduling, budgeting, transportation, crew deals and supplier agreements. Particular attention will be put on professional practice concerning the structure of the workday, shooting hours, turnaround time and safety issues that are the mutual responsibility of the producer, director and assistant director. Students who want to take this course must have a knowledge of Movie Magic Scheduling as they shall be required to prepare a production book during the course duration. Course fee is Php25,000.

Fundamentals of Screenwriting, on June 8-July 4, 2015, is a four week screenwriting workshop in the language of dramatic storytelling and visual storytelling. Sophia Wellington, a faculty member of the of the NYU Tisch School of Arts Asia in Singapore and who has taught screenwriting at many film schools including the London Film School and London Film Academy, will handle this course. The instruction will embrace various styles and methods of scriptwriting with a focus on giving students the opportunity to create and hone their own voices. At the end of the course, students are expected to complete a shooting draft for a 7-12 minute film. Course fee is Php25,000.

Basic Filmmaking: The Silent Film, on June 22- August 1, 2015, is a six week course in directing. Award winning director and NYU Tisch School of Arts Asia Professor Carlitos Siguion Reyna will teach this course on film direction. In this course, students will apply the basics of film language in film exercises and achieve a basic mastery of the classic conventions and tools of the film directors. The purpose of this course is to challenge the student to find his own cinematic voice within the basic, commonly understood language of narrative film. Each student will direct a 7-minute short silent film. Students will work on their projects in crews of four to six. Students will learn the aesthetics and expressive use of cinematography, sound and editing to fulfill the director’s vision but it will not focus on the technical know-how for these skills. The course requires that students bring in the shooting drafts of their scripts on the first day of class. Course fee is Php35,000.

Deadline for submission of application form is on May 15. Interviews will be held on May 18 and May 19. Acceptance to the program will be announced on May 20.
