March 19, 2015, Abu Dhabi  – HealthJustice Philippines and the Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA) lauded the Department of Health and Department of Finance for bagging the Bloomberg Philanthropies Award for Global Tobacco Control during last night’s ceremonies at the 16th World Conference on Tobacco or Health held in Abu Dhabi. The award was given to DOH and DOF for the implementation of the sin tax law in 2013.

Irene Reyes, managing director of HealthJustice said, “We congratulate the Philippine government for winning the award. The sin tax law (RA 10351) is a life-saving measure that is recognized worldwide. We are glad that the country has become a global role model for increasing tobacco taxes.”

The Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards for Global Tobacco Control aim to recognize governments and non-government organizations demonstrating excellent progress in implementing effective tobacco control measures as contained in the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). The WHO recognizes six of the most effective tobacco control measures under the MPOWER package which includes Monitoring the epidemic and prevention policies, Protecting people against secondhand smoke, Offering help to people who want to quit, Warning about the dangers of tobacco, Enforcing bans on advertising, promotions and sponsorships and Raising taxes and prices.

Dr. Ulysses Dorotheo, FCTC program director of SEATCA added, “This award to the Philippines recognizes the government’s compliance with its obligations under the FCTC and is both a pat on the back for protecting public health by increasing tobacco taxes but also a challenge to sustain the gains of the sin tax law.”

In 2013, the government was able to exceed targets for incremental revenue collectionwhich allowed for the Department of Health to allocate funds for different health programs, including the expansion of Philhealth coverage for 14.7 million poor and near-poor Filipino families.

In terms of the law’s effectiveness in reducing smoking prevalence, a Social Weathers Station (SWS) survey conducted in 2014 showed that smoking prevalence significantly dropped among the poor and the youth.  For those belonging to Socio-Economic Class E or the very poor, prevalence dropped from 38% in December 2012 to 25% in March 2014. Across age groups, smoking prevalence among those belonging to the 18-to-24-year-old age group was also reduced from 35% in December 2012 to 18% in March 2014.

“Although the law is still at its initial stage, we are already seeing its gains in both revenues and health outcomes. We hope that the Philippine government will sustain its strong implementation of the law. At the end of the day, the true measurement of the sin tax law’s effectiveness is not really the number of awards received, but the lives that are saved from smoking harms,” Reyes added.

“GANTIMPALA THEATER ANNOUNCES SUMMER WORKSHOPS AND 38TH THEATER SEASON”

“After being the resident theater company of the historic Rizal Park for a decade, Gantimpala Theater kicks off its 38th season in our new home, the AFP Theater,” Chairman and President Jun Pablo announced.

A partnership with Aguinaldo Theater Enterprises Inc. was agreed upon recently.

Ms. Liezl Adonis, general manager of the AFP Theater read in a social networking site that Gantimpala Theater was looking for a new home.  Adonis revealed, “Gantimpala Theater is one of our most treasured clients. They have been loyal to us.  When we found out about their predicament, we reached out to them. Per our agreement, we gave them office, rehearsal halls and storage spaces. And of course, their tradition of bringing quality Filipino production will continue on the AFP Theater stage.”

The 38th season officially begins with the annual Gantimpala Theater Summer Workshops.  These workshops has been a tradition for the dramatic arts company since their days as Bulwagang Gantimpala at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, with the Tanghalang Huseng Batute as their original home.

Beginning April 6 to May 2, musical theater courses are open for kids, teens and advanced/professional. In these workshops, participants will learn about acting, singing, dancing, techniques and professional practices needed by an actor and actress for a musical theater production.

Singer and comedienne Kakai Bautista, actors Marcus Madrigal, Ketchup Eusebio, chef and actress, China Cojuangco, TV news personality Valerie Tan, actor Migui Moreno, heartthrobs and Kampamilya talents Jose Sarrasola and Ivan Dorschner are some of the well-known entertainment personalites who became part of the GT Summer Workshop.

Resident directors, URIAN Awards nominnee and ALIW Awards Best Actor winner Roeder Camañag,  director, librettist and costume/set designer Jose Jeffrey Camañag and director and playwright Gean All de Leon will be the facilitators.

Tuition fee is P6,000. Enrollment is currently on-going.

A two-week stage management workshop is also being offered.  Ed Murillo, the Philippines’ foremost stage manager, will be the instructor.

Pablo talks about GT’s 38th theater season. “It promises to be  very exciting one. We present Kanser, the longest-running play of Gantimpala Theater gets an artistic make over as a musical theater production. We have a new book and libretto. The musical compositions are divine and yes, the cast of big name stars will perform with a live orchestra in Kanser @ 35, the musical. Florante at Laura, we present it as a komedya, the prevailing and most popular theater form during the time of Francisco Balagatas.  Ibong Adarna remains faithful to itscorrido origins but we made it more vibrant and electrifying as dances from Muslim cultural communities are used to highlight the quest of Don Juan.  El Filibusterismohighlights the dark elements of the novel with flashback scenes that allow audiences to have a  better understanding of the intentions of Dr. Jose Rizal. Speaking of our national hero, his short story El Consejos de Los Dioses is now a touring musical theater production billed “Paraisong Kayumanggi”.

Tayong lahat ay naglalakbay dahil may hinahanap tayo. O marahil, may gusto tayong tuklasin, sagutin, at namnamin…

Ang kanyang pagpapakumbaba samantalang she’s already an icon in the field of broadcasting ay tunay namang kahanga-hanga.

Kakabusog talaga. Naka-limang slices of chocolates yata ang nakain ng blogger na ito just in one sitting. Haha.

Anyway, balik tayo kina Norris John at Denz Salcines.

Napakagaan at napakasarap ding ka-kuwentuhan ni Father Chris, and at once, nakipag-bonding siya sa buong grupo nina Mam Tessie, Kuya Ernie, Norris, Denz and the rest…

Very physically and emotionally-draining ang eksenang iyon.

Kakainis… Haha. Pipigilan namin siyang umalis, pramis.

FAST CUT TO:

MAGPAKAILANMAN.
