Mga Ligaw Na Paru-Paro was among all those short films that SSSIP had seen in the recently-concluded Cinemalaya X independent Film Festival. And he never regretted watching it.
The film was dark comedy. And something really surprising came into at the middle of this highly-interesting short film. It would hold you in your seats, and would make you feel delighted, rather than dismayed.
It’s simple story-telling, and the director, no less than J.E. Tiglao (who already won as Best Director for his previous work Onyang), didn’t aspire a more artistic touch. No presumptions. But rather, he conveyed a more realistic touch as a short film maker.
A modern-day wife with an adopted son, but with a SECRET. And that was all. A very plain plot. But again, with a TWIST.
A half-woman, half-man (in short, a LESBIAN) was the main antagonist here. And Ms. Maria Isabel Lopez portrayed that surprising role. She suddenly came into the picture at the very night of the wife’s birthday. And they had sex.
Maribel Lopez delivered a very unique acting experience that a blogger hadn’t seen in years from a real woman who portrayed a character of a gay woman. Magnificent! She’s not the Maribel we’ve known, it’s as if she’s an entirely different person portraying that funny but very realistic lesbian character.
How we wished the short movie was prolonged. It could be more fascinating, indeed.
And director J.E. Tiglao surely knew what he’s doing. Congrats. (But sadly, this film didn’t win at the Cinemalaya X awards night. We wondered why. Haha).
