Officials of the Sundance Institute and the International Film Festival of Kerala are in Manila to serve on the jury of the 10th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and Competition ongoing until August 10 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and Ayala theaters at Greenbelt Makati, Alabang Town Center, TriNoma and Fairview Terraces in Quezon City.


Bird Runningwater, director of Sundance Institute’s Native American and Indigenous Program, and Bina Paul, Artistic Director of the International Film Festival of Kerala, join CCP Chairperson Emily A. Abrera, noted director Jose Javier Reyes and film critic Mario Hernando as members of the jury for this year’s Cinemalaya competition.


Currently based in Los Angeles, California, Runningwater oversees the Native Lab Film Fellowship, the Indigenous Producers Initiative, Sundance Film Festival’s Native Forum, and most recently started leading the Diversity work Institute-wide.  Internationally, Runningwater has established Indigenous filmmaker Labs in New Zealand and Australia. Before joining Sundance Institute, Runningwater was based in New York City and served as executive director of the Fund of the Four Directions, the private philanthropy of a Rockefeller family member.  Prior to that, he served as program associate in the Ford Foundation’s Media, Arts, and Culture Program. He is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma with degrees in Journalism and Native American Studies, and he received his Master of Public Affairs degree from the University of Texas at Austin’s Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs.


Paul is an alumna of the prestigious Film and TV Institute of India, Pune in 1983. She has been working as a film editor for the last twenty years. She has worked with many leading filmmakers in India and has won several State and National Awards for Editing. She has worked as the Senior Editor at C-DIT (Center for the Development of Imaging Technology) for ten years.


Along with editing, Paul has also been the Artistic Director of the International Film Festival of Kerala for the last twelve years. The festival is one of the most popular in India and is into its 19th Edition. Paul has served on Film Juries at numerous festivals including Berlin, Durban, Locarno, Romania and Zanzibar. She has also been involved with teaching at various institutes and a regular guest faculty at the Film and TV Institute of India.


Now on its tenth year, Cinemalaya X as this year’s edition is billed, is a project of the Cinemalaya Foundation, Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the Ayala Malls Cinemas. Cinemalaya is an all-digital film festival that aims to discover, encourage and honor cinematic works of Filipino filmmakers that boldly articulate and freely interpret the Filipino experience with fresh insight and artistic integrity.
