mara and the sea…

“MARA AND THE SEA…”

the sea that connects…

land and diversity.

an electrifying blue sea

with gigantic waves of bursting life-

out to sparkle

out to free

out to conquer…

a girl with vibrant energy

an actress with subtlety…

a carefree, wandering spirit

that loves the sea-

MARA.

it’s mara and the sea…

a relationship

that’s here

for

ETERNITY.

At nu’ng mainip na si direk Gallaga, pumasok na ito sa loob ng sinehan, together with Ms. Digna Santiago, a producer, and direk Joey Romero, also a veteran film maker and son of National Artist for Film na si Eddie Romero (R.I.P.).

Ngumiti at kumaway sa lahat ng taong naro’n ang Superstar in all her humility.

And the next scene was so emotional in the eyes of one blogger na nakasaksi sa pangyayaring iyon.

The 9th Cinema One Originals Festival will be opening with a special screening of the restored classic “Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?” on November 10, with the fifteen full-length feature films running from November 11 to 19 at Glorietta, Trinoma, and Robinson’s Galleria. Also watch out for Cinema One Originals Plus, the festival’s P2M category which features five films this year. The Cinema One Originals Festival is brought to you by the country’s number one cable channel, Cinema One.

“TEN GRIPPING IDEAS IN FILM LINED UP FOR CINEMA ONE ORIGINALS CURRENTS”

On a bigger and better 9th year of surging energy into the local film industry through the country’s best independent films, the Cinema One Originals festival presents new, gripping tales in ten full-length feature films as part of the Cinema One Originals Currents category.

Cinema One Originals Currents, the festival’s P1M budget category, is comprised of the following ten films: “Angustia” by Kristian Cordero, “Ang Pagbabalat ng Ahas” by Timmy Harn, “Islands” by Whammy Alcarazen, “Bukas Na Lang Sapagkat Gabi Na” by Jet Leyco, “Iskalawags” by Keith Deligero, “Saturday Night Chills” by Ian Lorenos, “Philippino Story” by Benjamin Garcia, “Shift” by Siege Ledesma, “Bendor” by Ralston Jover, and “Riddles of my Homecoming” by Arnel Mardoquio.

In “Angustia,” Kristian Cordero takes the audience back to 19th century Bicolandia, where a Spanish friar finds himself falling for a woman of indigenous origins. Paranoid due to his controversial emotions, he is taken to extremes that put life’s value at stake. “Angustia” stars Alex Medina, Jazmin Llana, Vic Loquias, Mitch Smith, and Maria Isabel Lopez.

“Ang Pagbabalat ng Ahas” by Timmy Harn is a comedy of a lower-middle class family that moves into an upper-middle class village. There, they notice that things are much different from where they used to be, and they even come to discover that a mysterious mad scientist keeps a living, breathing secret where he stays. “Ang Pagbabalat ng Ahas” stars Mervyn Brondial, Kay Brondial, Carl Sebastian Sanchez, Liza Lorena, Jaime Fabregas, Gio Alvarez, Ji-an Lachica, Sasi Casas, Rose Galvez, Miguel Reyes, Marija Vicente, Gino Javier, Rox Lee, and Charles Salazar.

Whammy Alcarazen’s “Islands,” an experimental work of science fiction, details how a spacecraft lands through the geographies of time and space, creating a background to intertwining stories, and exposing a particular form of gravity human beings covertly feel—the gravity of falling in love. “Islands” stars Luis Alandy, Benjamin Alves, Meryll Soriano, Alizon Andres, Donna Matibag, Daisy Matibag, Marita Zobel, Irma Adalawan, Jhizeli Deocareza, Peque Gallaga, Acey Aguilar, and Anna Luna.

A four-part narrative of three related occurrences during the time of Martial Law plays out in Jet Leyco’s “Bukas Na Lang Sapagkat Gabi Na”. Stemming from tragic accidents, the film reveals truths behind the controversial time in the lives of the Filipino people. “Bukas Na Lang Sapagkat Gabi Na” stars Raul Morit, Lemuel Silvestre, Maria Veronica Santiago, Hector Macaso, Jack Yabut, Dan de Guzman, Herald Gregory Chavez, Peewee O’Hara, Emlyn Olfindo Santos, Paolo Gomingo, Flor Salanga, Renerio Concepcion, Max Celada, Angelo Hulip, and Carlon Matobato.

The comedic “Iskalawags” by Keith Deligero tells an aching tale of friendship and youth as it goes into a coming-of-age story in a small town. In a film that shows its audience how it was to live the life of a teenager, “Iskalawags” depicts a journey towards self-discovery. “Iskalawags” stars Kerwin Otida, Reynaldo Formentera, Windel Otida, Johnreil Lunzaga, Micko Maurillo, Mark Lawrence Montalban, and Jeric Raval.

In Ian Lorenos’ film “Saturday Night Chills,” three long-time friends take on the odds as they explore the dark world of illegal sports gambling in the Philippines. “Saturday Night Chills” stars Rayver Cruz, Matteo Guidicelli, Joseph Marco, David Chua, and Miko Raval.

Benjamin Garcia presents a cautionary tale in this year’s festival with his film “Philippino Story”. In this drama, the details of male prostitution are tackled and its dangers are exposed. “Philippino Story” stars Mark Gil, Jun-jun Quintana, Nor Domingo, Kimmy Maclang, and Rolando Inocencio.

“Shift” by Siege Ledesma goes into the popular culture behind call centers in the country. In her film, he centers on the career of an idealistic, tomboyish slacker who is employed and mentored by a pragmatic, gay senior agent. From their work together, an unconventional relationship blossoms, challenging their most personal convictions. “Shift” stars Yeng Constantino, Felix Roco, Alex Medina, and Matt Valena.

In “Bendor” by Ralston Jover, the spotlight shines on an obscure 55-year old woman who experiences life’s absurdities at the crossroad of her journey through an old age. She lives a contemplative daily life as a candle vendor around the periphery of Quiapo Church. On the side, she sells illegal pills—Cytotec—abortifacients for desperate pregnant clients. “Bendor” stars Vivian Velez, Sue Prado, Evelyn Vargas, Anna Luna, Lester Llansang,  Chanel Latorre, Nico Antonio, and Czarina Alcantara.

Arnel Mardoquio’s silent film “Riddles of my Homecoming” tells a tale surrounding the traditional belief of the Lumads and Moros of Mindanao—that when a person dies, his or her soul returns to that person’s homeland. “Riddles of my Homecoming” stars Fe “Gingging” Hyde, Jillian Khayle Barbarona, Jeff Sabayle, Christine Austero, Madz Garcia, and Perry Dizon.

In a Cinema One film, absolutely anything is possible.

HIGHLIGHTS & SIDELIGHTS AT CINEMA ONE ORIGINALS  SECOND PRESS CONFERENCE:

Eleganteng-elegante at simple lang ang mga kasuotan nila, pero they both carried it so well.

They were in their “high spirits”, always mingling and greeting with the members of the press and media bloggers…

Napaka-“sozy” at very “corporate” ang dating.

Kudos to their managers and handlers for instructing them well on how to move and socialize on special showbiz functions like this. Good!…

Siya ang paboritong tanungin ng mga press people among all the new indie directors that afternoon. Napakagaling ng sagot ni direk Kristian: “Maribel is a very formidable actress”, anya pa…

Napakaguwapo pala ni Mr. Ernesto L. Lopez, ang head ngAbs-Cbn Publishing. Kay bait-bait pa, very charming and very accomodating ang dating. He’s only in his late twenties or early thirties, we think? naku, ha, baka ma-inlab naman sa kanya ang blogger na ‘yun!….

Kakainis.

He could change his looks in instant that afternoon na parang isang “chameleon”…

Haha.
