“Fiery Flamenco Returns to the CCP in June”

SPANISH flamenco dancer and choreographer Eduardo Guerrero returns to Manila to perform De Dolores, a stunning flamenco concert which mesmerized Manila audiences last year. Eduardo Guerrero’s De Dolores will be shown on June 14 and 15, 2013, 8pm at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (CCP Little Theater). The event is presented in collaboration with the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Embassy of Spain, Instituto Cervantes de Manila and BENCH.

Guerrero took his first dance steps at the early age of six. He studied Spanish dance at the Conservatorio de Danza de Cádiz and later completed his contemporary and classical training with David Greenall and Monserrat Marin. He has worked with the biggest names in flamenco such as Eva Yerbabuena, Amador Rojas and Antonio Canales, among others. He has garnered several awards such as La Perla de Cádiz and the First prize in the II Choreographic Contest of Andalucia Professional Dance Conservatories.

Flamenco is rooted deeply in the cultures of Spain, though it is mostly centered in Andalusia, yet included in almost every social event in both European and Spanish countries. The Cultural Center of the Philippines has presented flamenco dance and music productions, among them, Spain’s famed Flamenco dancer Sara Baras.

For more information please contact the Embassy of Spain at 817-6676 Loc. 112 or emb.manila@maec.es, the CCP at 832-1125.

‘Dilaw o Pula’: A Revisited Play at PSF’s Theatre Fest

POSTED BY  ⋅ 19/04/2013

Its controversial nature was probably the ‘key’ to the late Rene Villanueva’s translation and adaptation of Manuel Puig’s novel titled ‘El beso de la mujer araña’ (Kiss of the Spider Woman), written in 1983, and had its recent local production as ‘Halik ng Tarantula’; but there is one play that could match its intensity, its sensuality and its humanity—Vince Tañada’s original play titled ‘Dilaw o Pula’.

However, after the dismay of the public on BB Gandanghari’s poor performance even with all the hype of the said production—it will have its scheduled provincial tour slated soon. Prior to that, the one-act play written and directed by Carlos Palanca Awardee in 2012 will steal the scene with its more substance, meatier, more serious tone, and fiercer take of the characters acted by Philippine Stagers Foundation’s (PSF) prized actors—Chris Lim and Kierwin Larena.

Benjo, a staunch supporter of the former President of the Republic of the Philippines—Cory Aquino shared the prison cell with Emil, a Marcos loyalist for many years. Despite their differences, the two developed a beautiful friendship, founded on love, proving that love is a natural human tendency that nothing and nobody can stop; an innate feeling that anyone could feel regardless of sex. As they compete for the single slot for pardon, the two realized that their love is far more important than their freedom. As the innocent one stayed behind the bars, the one at fault insisted that he’s undeserving. But he was left with no choice but to leave not only the cell, which he regarded as his home but also where the love he nurtured through the years.

Kierwin Larena plays Emil and Chris Lim plays Benjo in this one-act production, which was first mounted in 2012 and cited as the Gender Sensitive play for the theatre company’s annual festival of original plays. A two-character play that guarantees breath-taking dialogues and scenes that any audience won’t let go till it reaches its peak and its conclusion.

Like the ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’, which was first staged in London in 1985 at the Bush Theatre, in an English language version by translator Allan Baker, starring Mark Rylance and Simon Callow—‘Dilaw o Pula’ is also set in a cell. The question is, will Larena and Lim’s portrayals match the actors’ sensitivity who portrayed in Puig’s piece? Will Tañada outshine Puig?

Also, what makes this one-act play interesting?

Tañada, opted to have two straight guys acting out the two characters, and expected to stir the audience’s curiosity; probably questioning about the two’s sexuality. ‘Dilaw o Pula’ is reminiscent to the 2005 film titled, ‘Brokeback Mountain’ directed by Ang Lee, adapted from Annie Proulx’s 1997 short story of the same title. It featured both straight film stars Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal.

Is it a gay play?

“It is not,” Tañada was quick to defend. “But it’s up to the audience to decide. I expect that the audience would be more mature in understanding the material.”

More plays will be shown  this coming April 27, 2013  at the PSF Studio, 4th Floor Vincent I Bldg, 411 Calabash A cor. G. Tuazon Street, Sampaloc, Balic Balic, Manila. For more details, contact             +639273913447      .

Imagedirek elwood: looked like a praising fan for the philippine stagers, but his greatness still outshone the PSF event.

Imagedirek elwood with cinema one’s ronald arguelles: supporters for the arts.

At laging si direk Elwood ang nagsasalita sa harap ng mikropono, to the delight of everyone- mostly student-workshoppers and special friends of PSF.

Talagang dito na lubos na napahanga si direk Elwood (a separate story feature and blogpost will soon be posted sa dulang ito nina Chris at Kerwin).

When a genuine and veteran artist admired a fellow artist… all beauty will break LOOSE.

A person of greatness from the cinematic world saw the magnificence of one theater group. AND THAT’S ONE GREAT STORY TO TELL.

GO FOR GOLD, STAGERS!

janice: picture perfect.

Iyan ang titulo ng first major concert ni Gerald this coming April 30 at the Music Museum.

Santambak pa rin ang mga out-of-town shows niya, corporate events, and the likes.

But now, talagang all-out ang focus ni Gerald sa kanyang major concert.

A GREAT, NEW SEASON FOR PHILIPPINE STAGERS FOUNDATION!

Hindi siya nagdadalawang-isip, hindi siya nagi-inarte, hindi siya “acting with an attitude”, as so they say always to this blogger. Kasi siguro, alam niyang basta PSF, isang great artistic event ang dadaluhan niya.

Nakakalokahhhh!

Anyway, last March 20 (Wednesday), damang-dama na naman ng blogger na ito ang KALULUWA NG SINING sa napakagandang event at show na ipinalabas ng PSF (Philippine Stagers Foundation) sa Pan Pacific Hotel, kung saan idinaos ang kanilang “culminating event” para sa kanilang Foundation Day at sa pagbubukas ng New Season (bale their 12th season) sa kanilang theater group.

It was entitled “PSF: Moving Furward On Its 12th Season!”

Yes, naka-twelve season na nga ang PSF. To date, ang PSF ang isa sa mga pinaka-successful na theater groups ng bansa, touring key cities all-over the Philippines and invading university/school campuses…. TO THE MAX!

Very ‘sozy’ ang ginanap na event. The Stagers were all so handsome and beautiful in their trendy outfits na “fur-inspired” motiff.

Although hindi man siya ang naboto naming “Male Stager Of The Night”, outstanding din si Patrick with his looks. Walang tatanggi!

Female Stager Of  The Night naman si Cyndi Liper na super-glamorous-looking on that event.

Fun, free, loosening it up!

Naka-bonding agad ng blogger na ito si Dr. Almeda and she’s so warm and very sincere as a person!

Very cool but igniting kasi ang naging performance ni Jordan, at na-captivate niya ang puso ng mga sentimental na judges when he sang the song “Ikaw”, popularized by Ariel Rivera in the l980′s.

Nagkaroon naman ng bagong IDOLO ang blogger na ito in person of one ditinguished guest that evening- si Mr. Michael Angelo, isang book author, ex-seminarian and now a Political Adviser. Grabe, ang galing magsalita ni Mr. Angelo, very thought-provoking, pero hinahaluan niya ng komedya ang mga words of wisdom na sinabi niya when he gave a brief speech that night. Oh, my! Mr. Angelo is the NEW PROPHET of Philippine society!

Parang photography stills na gumagalaw, in black & white.

Parang “State of the Nation” address ng isang Presidente.

Napakapangit tignan. And with direk Vince’s brilliant and very creative mind, tiyak na mas magpupunyagi ang bagong version ng PSF in staging the life of our beloved Saint Pedro Calungsod.)***

Yes, PSF is MOVING FORWARD. And we’re glad to be a part of it!

Tama ba ako, papa Vince? Part na ba kami ng PSF??? Haha.

THE MASTERS!

I wonder, where will the Philippine Cinema become now, without them?

They were the ones who implanted the seeds, took care of the roots and let not the wind blew-away its life…

They took care of the ART and its existence, inspired the young generation of new aspiring filmakers…

They “modernized” the craft, improved its vision and made strong the foundation.

Yes, without them, the Philippine Cinema could never be where it is now.

A lot of new indie film artists now are “so egoistic”, you could not even approach them for interviews and got lots of “air”…

They should know, that these masters had invested so much “pakikisama”, so much of “giving” & “sharing” to be where they are now…

Maaaring nakapaglakbay na sila sa iba’t-ibang bansa, o nabigyan ng mga awards o recognition sa early start ng mga careers nila as directors, but they should and they must, put their feets back at the ground always.

The likes of delos Reyes, Suzara, Jose Javier Reyes, Gallaga, Lamangan, Perez, Aguiluz, and the others… they have offered almost the wholes of their lives para “makisama” sa mga tao sa showbiz…

They gave and gave and gave… up to the point na sila na ang nasasaktan.

They valued friendship, felt grateful to the people who supported them.

These masters are the most humble people that this blogger had ever met…

THIS BLOGGER GETS A WONDERFUL SHOULDER HUG FROM MS. EVANGELINE PASCUAL- THE FIRST FILIPINA MISS WORLD, AS THEY WERE JOINED BY JAO MAPA, WADE ROWLAND AND MAMA MARIBEL LOPEZ.

The Film Artist Group (FAG) was founded by Miss Maria Isabel Lopez in the year 2003.

Since then, the group had exhibited many paintings, organized many charitable events and fund-raising projects, and made people be aware that local filipino stars and celebrities are PAINTERS-ARTISTS, too…

It was Miss Evangeline Pascual (the first filipina who became Miss World) who was with Maribel from the ‘day one’ of this group. Through thick and thin, she and Maribel have fought for the visual arts and helped young students express themselves through any artistic forms.

Sadly, five members of the FAG had already died. They were the late movie directors Celso Ad Castillo, Marilou Diaz-Abaya and Mario O’Hara. The two others were Francis Magalona (the late singer-rapper) and Mr. Vic Vargas, a veteran actor.

Recently, the FAG people joined the students of Adamson University on its Foundation Day last Feb. 11, 2013. Maribel was joined by Ms. Evangeline Pascual and Jao Mapa, both the most active members of FAG.

Their paintings were exhibited at the painting gallery of the famous university.

Jao’s paintings were the most-admired by the students. Other celebrity painters-exhibitors (but weren”t able to attend the said event and opening of the painting exhibit) were Ruby Rodriguez, Melissa Mendez, Dranreb Belleza, Lani Lobangco and Mike Austria.

The Philippine Stagers Foundation actors, led by Mr. Vince Tanada, together with very handsome Jordan Ladra, Patrick Libao and Kevin Posadas supported and attended the event, since they’re the regular theater people of “Adamsonians”.

adamson

The performers-students from Adamson University that afternoon were the Adamson University Chamber Singers and the Adamson University Acoustic Band. As Ms. Maribel Lopez and company watched and looked upon them as they performed, they all saw bright faces of hopes for the future and artistic skills. Very special thanks to the Cultural Affairs Department of AU (Adamson University), with Professor Nenita Dimapilis as its Director, and Ms. Catherine Cequena as its Staff. Of course, how could this blogger forget Father Gregorio L. Barriaga who was so kind. Father Gregorio is the Director-Head of AU.  There were also other more V.I.P.’s from Adamson University who attended the said painting exhibit event at their school that we weren’t able to get the names, but they were all so warm and accomodating to Ms. Maribel Lopez and company.

To Adamson University faculty and staff, and of course, their wonderful students, THANK YOU!
